The lecture, which took place in October, featured the work of two linguists, David J. Peterson and Dr. Jessie Sams. David and Jessie currently work full time as “conlangers,” or creators of invented languages.

The Political Science Council of Majors is hosting an All-Majors Meeting on Monday, November 14 at 12 pm in PUP 208! Join us to learn about the council, let us know what you want from the department, learn about POLI-related orgs, and more!
The Political Science Council of Majors unites those students who are interested in pursuing a Political Science Major, or any associated minors and concentrations, as well as those students interested in a graduate education and/or career in a field related to Political science. The organization also works hand in hand with the Political Science Department of UMBC to make Political Science information available to all students-members throughout UMBC, including a beginning of the year orientation for new students..
In conjunction with the exhibition Oletha DeVane: Spectrum of Light and Spirit, the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture presents a closing panel discussion, featuring the artist, the exhibition curator, and additional scholars:

Frank Anderson Successfully Defends his Dissertation
On November 1, 2022 Frank Anderson of LLC Cohort 18 successfully defended his dissertation and earned the title of Doctor or Philosophy. His degree will be conferred in December.
His virtual defense went very smoothly and he gave an excellent presentation of his dissertation research, "Rhetorics of Transformation: Centering the Experiences of Young People to Foster Youth Agency and Create Positive Change."

ANCS 350-01-Topics in Ancient Studies: Emotions in the Ancient World
Dr. Michele Asuni
W 1:00-2:15 pm, Hybrid
Ancient Greek and Latin literature is filled with episodes of intense anger, desire, grief, fear, and pity experienced by both gods and humans. But what, if anything, is unique about the emotions of the ancient Greeks and Romans? How similar and how different from our own were their emotional landscapes? This course is an introduction to the study of emotion in the ancient world. It explores how the Greeks and Romans conceptualized, portrayed, and lived their emotions. By focusing on emotion as deeply rooted in the body, this course considers and questions the universality of human emotion. All texts will be read in translation and provided by the instructor.
