<Title>Tamisha Ponder Successfully Defends her Dissertation</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>On February 1, 2023 <strong>Tamisha Ponder</strong> of LLC Cohort 19 successfully defended her dissertation and earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy. Her degree will be conferred in May, 2023.</div><div><br></div><div>Her virtual defense went very smoothly and she gave a powerful presentation of her dissertation research, "'I Wasn't Going to do a Hunger Strike, but in the End my Body Paid the Price:' An Annotated Study of the Lived Experiences of Black Lives Matter Student Activists Between 2014 and 2016."</div><div><br></div><div>The program wishes to acknowledge the guidance and commitment of Tamisha's committee:</div><div><br></div><div>Dr. Beverly Bickel, Language, Literacy &amp; Culture, Co-Chair</div><div>Dr. Michelle Scott, History, Co-Chair</div><div>Dr. Kimberly Moffitt, Language, Literacy &amp; Culture</div><div>Dr. G.     <div class="html-content">Dear Colleagues,<br><br>You are cordially invited to attend and participate in the seventh annual Provost's Teaching and Learning Symposium at UMBC, which will take place on <strong>Friday, April 21, 2023, from 12:00 to 3:30 p.m.</strong><br><br><strong>Call for Poster Presentations</strong><br>Posters should describe projects designed to enhance or assess students' learning or success at UMBC. To submit your abstract, please complete <a href="https://forms.gle/Zv6gxaRrC1Dhmtz6A" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">this Google form</a> by Friday, March 3, 2023. Proposals will be screened for appropriateness to the Symposium and authors will be notified by Friday, March 10 if their submission has been accepted. Further instructions about preparing and setting up posters will be sent to presenters in late March.<br><br><strong>General Information</strong><br>This Symposium, part of the Hrabowski Innovation Fund initiative, will bring together UMBC faculty and staff to discuss transformative learning experiences.     <div class="html-content">It's been a chilly start to the semester so far, but there are so many things happening on campus, you're sure to stay warm! In Kyoto, February is when the gardens of plum trees at Kitano Tenmangu spring back to life after the winter, filling the air with their sweet scent and their variety of soft pink and white blossoms. Keep an eye out here in Maryland for spring and greenery to return soon, too - winter is almost over! <div><br></div><h5>Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship - App Deadline March 9</h5><p>Are you interested in study abroad? Do you receive Pell grants as part of your financial aid? If you answered 'yes' to both of these, you should consider applying for a Benjamin Gilman Study Abroad scholarship! The program offers <strong>up to $8,000 </strong>to support students' study abroad opportunities, and typically one in four applicants receives an award. </p><p>Don't wait - the application is due <strong>March 9th</strong>! For more information about the program, <a href="mailto:educationabroad@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">email the Education Abroad office</a>! </p><h5>URCAD is Coming! Apply by Feb 13</h5><p>URCAD 2023 will take place on April 12. URCAD is a great opportunity for students to present their research to the UMBC community. The goal of the project is to see if students make connections between environmental justice, waste and climate change at universities. We work with faculty, staff, and students to develop the knowledge, awareness, and skills to cultivate an inclusive and social justice-oriented campus community. We ground everything we do in an ethic of radical love and belonging, affirming</span><span> the multiple, diverse, and intersecting identities of UMBC students as we work to create spaces where they feel seen and celebrated.     <div class="html-content"><span>The Department of Political Science is looking for two strong candidates to represent us at the<strong> 63rd Annual Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference (NAFAC) in Annapolis,</strong> taking place </span><strong><span>April </span><span><span>11-13</span>, 2023</span></strong><span><strong>.</strong> From the conference organizers:<br><br>NAFAC is a leading foreign affairs conference for undergraduate students to</span><br><span>discuss pressing global issues. The conference provides the opportunity for students to engage</span><br><span>with future civil and military leaders on the grounds of the United States Naval Academy in</span><br><span>Annapolis, Maryland.<br><br></span><span>This year's conference explores the topic, <strong>"<u>Democracies Divided: The Proliferation of</u></strong></span><strong><u><br></u></strong><span><strong><u>Polarization." </u></strong>The topic explores how authoritarian states seek to weaponize modern constructs</span><br><span>against democratic states, and how democracies around the world are seeking to heal their</span><br><span>internal and external divisions in order to promote stability in the international community.</span><span><br><br><strong>This conference will include FREE room and board</strong> and should be an incredible experience.     <div class="html-content"><div><strong>Fulbright Accelerator Workshop for CAHSS Faculty</strong></div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong>Friday, February 24, 2023</strong></div><div><strong>Noon-1:00 pm, Dresher Center Conference Room</strong></div><div><strong>PAHB, Room 216</strong></div><div> </div><div>Lunch will be available from 11:15-noon.</div><div>Please wear a mask during the workshop. </div><div><br></div><div><em>Space in the workshop is limited due to room capacity, so registration is necessary. </em></div><div> </div><div><strong><a href="https://forms.gle/D1pHey8U2Yd5fPKy8" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">REGISTER </a>BY MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20TH.</strong></div><div><br></div><div>Learn about the 2024-2025 <strong><a href="https://www.cies.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program</a></strong> and other exciting Fulbright opportunities at this workshop for CAHSS faculty, presented by the Institute of <strong>International Education (IIE)</strong>, which develops and implements the Fulbright program.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Dr. Julie Taylor</strong>, IIE Director of Academic Relations for the Fulbright program, will provide information on the upcoming competition cycle that starts in February 2023, and on the Catalog of Awards and other Fulbright programs for faculty.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Dr. Brian Souders</strong>, Associate Director for Global Engagement Opportunities in the Center for Global Engagement, and UMBC's Fulbright Scholar Liaison, will discuss support for faculty applicants.     <div class="html-content">Congratulations to Dr. Charles Ichoku on being appointed the new director of the UMBC-led Goddard Earth Science Technology and Research (GESTAR) Center II! Dr. Ichoku will be applying his experience with remote sensing and earth science research not only as the new director of GESTAR II but also as a professor in our department. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Ichoku! <div><br></div><div>Dr. Ichoku joins us from Howard University, where he has been teaching Earth and Environmental Sciences, and simultaneously serving as the Distinguished Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Science Center in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology (NCAS-M). Previously, Dr. Ichoku worked as a Research Physical Scientist with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for 20 years. He earned his Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from the Pierre &amp; Marie Curie University, Paris, France, after earning both his M.S. in Remote Sensing and his B.S. in Surveying from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus.</div><div><div><br></div><div>You can read more about the extensive experience Dr. Ichoku brings to our department and to the NASA-supported work of GESTAR II in the UMBC news article by Sarah Hansen linked below.<div><br></div><div><a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/new-director-to-take-earth-science-research-into-next-era/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">New center director to take NASA-supported Earth science research into next era at UMBC</a></div></div></div></div>
