Course Description:This course introduces the key concepts sociologists have contributed to the study of gender. We will examine the origins and development of those concepts and empirical work on the sociology of gender in the last three decades. Intersectional feminist theories and research will be emphasized, as we examine how gender is socially constructed within ethno-racial contexts. Students will also be introduced to global/transnational concerns, studies of masculinities, the body and sexuality studies.

The NSF-wide CAREER program supports early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. Activities pursued by early-career faculty should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research.
Both webinars will include the same briefing on the CAREER program and key solicitation requirements followed by a question and answer session. (Faculty who are interested need to attend only one.)

The UMBC Department of Music is seeking an affiliate artist position in classical guitar to begin Fall 2023. Bachelor’s required and advanced degrees or equivalent professional experience preferred. Evidence of successful teaching at the University level preferred. The position will include teaching of guitar majors and non-majors, possible performances with RUCKUS, the faculty new music ensemble, and other opportunities based on expertise.

Join us for Maryland Matters and UMBC Present: Climate Calling: A Community Conversation. This forum will connect new leaders in Governor Wes Moore's administration and UMBC students, whose generation stands to gain or suffer the most from climate policies for years to come.
The event will include:
- Informal conversations with members of Governor Wes Moore's administration about Maryland's climate future.
- Opportunities to connect with UMBC organizations and faculty and student researchers who are working to address issues affecting our climate and environment.

In May 2021, Maryland Matters' founding editor Josh Kurtz stepped back from daily management of our nonprofit newsroom to undertake a project looking at the threat of climate change in Maryland. Lauren Pollak successfully presents her
Dissertation Research Proposal
The Language, Literacy, and Culture Program is pleased to announce that Lauren Pollak of Cohort 23 successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation research proposal to her committee on May 1, 2023.
Lauren's project is titled, An Intersectional Ethnographic Study of Community College Students who Self-Place into Co-Requisite Composition Courses at the Community College of Baltimore County.
After her presentation, Lauren had a substantive discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Her committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and helped Lauren consider some key issues as she moves forward into the research and writing.
