Being from Lebanon, what has the MCS degree taught you in terms of international relations and has it changed your perspective ?
“Oohh, good question! Being Middle Eastern with this major has been beneficial for me because I contributed a lot by sharing my past experiences that resonated with the topics being taught and shared ideas as I believe I have come across a lot in my life so far from living in so many different places. Especially in MCS 334, learning about globalization has helped me view my culture and other cultures in a more objective way. In that class, I felt like I gave a lot of input because of my background knowledge and living the experience. As media and communications is such a broad major, and there is so much you can do with it, I feel like wherever I end up for my career it will be extremely useful and I hope to use my MCS skills to continue growing in my field.”
What are your career passions and how do you plan to utilize your skills from MCS to fit those passions?
I’m currently taking MCS 388, a public relations class and this has made me want to focus more on PR. The skills that this class has taught me so far such as writing news releases and branding for companies are topics that I feel would be very useful when starting my career. I would love to work in a humanitarian agency like Professor Eagle. His guest speakers that work in that sector have inspired me a lot.
In terms of nationality, how do you feel about the current representation of Lebanon in the mass media?
“To be honest, the way Lebanon is represented in the media really upsets me. It’s been portrayed as unsafe which is truly not the case, I feel safer there if anything. Lebanon is a very westernized country with so much life in it, and I always look forward to going back and visiting my family friends. In fact I’m planning on moving back there after graduation. Media sources need to focus more on the artistic scene in Beirut and how different ethnicities are reflected in the city's architecture and food. It is such a diverse country and we never let politics or religion divide our people.”
As you get ready to graduate, do you have any advice for current students from different countries?
“I’m so anxious to graduate already. I came into college not knowing what I wanted to do and what career path to take. I would advise anyone going into college and feeling conflicted to not be so hard on themselves. After all, we are still young and I always tell myself that what’s meant to be for me will come for me. We have a whole life ahead of us. When it comes to international students I would tell them to never change who they are to fit in or feel ashamed of their cultures. UMBC is so diverse and I have found many friends who share a similar culture to mine and it has brought us closer. It’s always comforting to have a piece of home within yourself and always take pride in it.”

GWST 378: Women, Gender, and Sceince
This course explores how the sciences have conceptualized and explained various forms of difference - what scientific knowledge says about sex, gender, race, sexuality, and other identity categories - as well as whether gender and race shape the “doing” of science-(how) does identity matter in scientific practice? Through a series of writing and research projects, the course asks students to untangle the complex relationship between scientific knowledge and social inequality, and to consider role of scientific practice in social change.

Jackson Tucker awarded an LLC fellowship
Jackson Tucker of LLC Cohort 25 has been awarded the Language, Literacy & Culture Program's Publicly Engaged Research and Digital Storytelling Fellowship for a portion of his long-term public humanities project, "The Electric, Immortal Weirton Steel Corporation." Weirton Steel Corporation was founded in West Virginia in 1909 as a vertically integrated steel production facility, the bulk of which has been torn down; the remaining finishing plants are now owned by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., the largest flat-rolled steel producer in North America.
For the scope of this award, Jackson will be collaborating with industrial museums. His overall research goal is to interrogate the ways in which power relations have changed over the last century as union power has diminished. His research will explore lives and personal histories through an economic lens to better understand U.S. working-class positionality within a broader global framework. The Rust Belt is emblematic of the volatility and environmental degradation of globalization, thus providing a model within which to explore these ideas.
The end result (which is beyond the scope of this initial award) will be a fully interactive, virtual reality museum exhibit that will provide an opportunity to present a social and cultural history that has been lost to many.

ANCS End-of-Year Party!
Dear members of the UMBC Ancient Studies Community,
It is my pleasure to invite you all once again to an end-of-year party at my house, 1 Alquin Court, Catonsville, MD 21228, on Saturday May 11, 2024 starting at 4:00 PM. Please note that this is a bit earlier than we normally hold it. I will provide nibbles, Italian sausage, salad, and some drinks. You are welcome to bring whatever salads, desserts, and drinks you would like.
Parents, spouses, partners, and children are all welcome to join us.

Opportunity: AMST Research Assistant Position
Beginning Fall 2023
Research Assistant Tasks include:
Printing and photocopying articles and book excerpts
Transcribing highlighted sections of sources
Picking up books from the library
Organizing and managing all sources in an Excel spreadsheet, Zotero, and physical folder box
Finding academic and popular media articles for subjects of interest
The project is on contemporary social forms of reading and readership (think, book clubs) and race. You don't need any expertise in the area of research, just good research and organizational skills.
Pay would be $15 an hour.
1-2 hours of work on the project per week; but the RA can set their own schedule.
The position would start in Fall 2023 and hopefully the RA could commit to one full academic year.
