By integrating theoretical and experiential perspectives, this course explores the social construction of masculinities and their intersections with other systems of inequality, such as race, class, and sexuality. Drawing on the contemporary feminist and masculinity studies scholarship on men and masculinities, the course examines the multiple and hierarchically organized configurations of masculinities primarily within the U.S context. However, an overall global approach is also pursued through an investigation of the linkages between formations of globalization and masculinities.

The course investigates the histories, cultural politics, and embodied practices of human reproduction in the US using a reproductive justice framework. It examines heteropatriarchal and white supremacist institutions and ideologies that shape American notions of appropriate family formation, national belonging, and reproductive liberty/duty. It considers the impacts of both material technologies for preventing, interrupting, and assisting procreative processes and organized advocacy for sexual and reproductive rights, health, and justice on diverse reproductive lives.

No matter how long you’ve taught, there is always something you can learn from your colleagues. And if you generally prepare and teach your classes in isolation, you may wish you had more opportunities to have the kinds of conversations with colleagues from across the disciplines that would enrich your teaching practice, help you improve student engagement, and deepen your sense of belonging to a community of scholars. Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) at UMBC fill this niche. The Faculty Development Center is pleased to announce five new proposed topics for Faculty Learning Communities in AY 2023-24:
What are FLCs? Faculty Learning Communities are groups of 6-12 self-selected faculty who are co-learners, joining together across disciplines for a year-long exploration of specific evidence-based teaching practices. FLCs support faculty in developing a new pedagogical approach, new kinds of assignments, and/or new ways to assess student learning. Participants who meet the attendance requirements (missing no more than 3 out of approximately 11 meetings over the academic year) receive a professional development award. The meeting format for each FLC, in-person or virtual, will be determined by the preference of the facilitators and the majority of the applicants.

Who is eligible? All current faculty, as well as staff who teach, are encouraged to participate.

To apply: The application form contains descriptions of each of the proposed FLCs. Please submit your application to fdc@umbc.edu by Monday, June 26th. Although you can only participate in one FLC, you may apply to more than one, ranking your choices on the application form. Pending budget decisions, the FLCs that receive the greatest numbers of applicants will go forward as FDC-sponsored FLCs for 2023-24.

The Language, Literacy, and Culture Program is pleased to announce that Shani Fleming of LLC Cohort 14 successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation research proposal to her committee on May 10, 2023.

Shani's project is titled, Exploring the Impact of Academic Credentialing on the
Black Physician Assistant Workforce.

After her presentation, Shani had a substantive discussion with the committee about the next stages of her work. Her committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and helped Shani consider some key issues as she moves forward into the research and writing.

Dr. Christine Mallinson, Professor of Language, Literacy & Culture and Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship, was justappointed the 2023-2024 Lipitz Distinguished Professor in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Established by the Roger C. Lipitz and the Lipitz Family Foundation, the fellowship is intended "to recognize and support innovative and distinguished teaching and/or research in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences." She will be taking the coming academic year to move her research forward, especially her two current collaborative NSF funded projects at the intersection of language, culture, technology, and society.
