<Title>Dr. Teodora Adzharova to join UMBC Music Faculty</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><em>We are delighted to introduce Teodora Adzharova who will join the UMBC faculty in Fall 2023 as a visiting lecturer of piano.</em><div><div><br></div><div><p><span>As an active soloist and sought-after chamber musician, Bulgarian pianist Teodora Adzharova performs throughout the Baltimore-Washing region, frequently collaborating with musicians from both the Peabody Institute and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.  She has had numerous appearances at the Sundays at Three Concert Series, Summer Chamber Music at Roland Park, Montpelier Arts Center, Washington College, Towson University, University of Maryland, Silo Hill, and as part of the Hedgelawn Series.  On many occasions, Theodore's recordings have been broadcast on APM's Performance Today. </span></p><p><span><br>In 2015, she was honored to inaugurate the Peabody-UMBC </span><span>Partnership in Innovation alongside cellist Mauricio Ray Gallego. Teodora is an avid proponent of new music and has often appeared with the Now Hear This ensemble, led by Courtney Orlando, performing works by groundbreaking composers such as Reich, Haas, and Mincek. As a soloist, she has participated in master classes with many esteemed pianists including Richard Goode, John Perry, Jose Feghali, Tamara Poddubnaya, Eric Heidsieck and Anton Dikov , and has performed under the baton of David Zinman and Edward Polochick. In 2016, she was chosen as the pianist for the Naxos recording of Pulitzer Prize winner Kevin Puts' CD under the direction of Marin Alsop. Teodora is also a co-founder and artistic director of the Annunciation Cathedral Concert Series in Baltimore, MD.</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>Teodora's performing history encompasses the stages of multiple countries (US, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Macedonia, Czech Republic) and accolades at national and international competitions (Clara Wells Scholarship (US), Yamaha Scholarship Competition (Bulgaria), Albert Roussel (Bulgaria), Seiler (Bulgaria), and Nikolai Rubenstein (France). She holds performance degrees from the Peabody Institute (MM, 2011; Performance Diploma, 2013; DMA, 2020) where she studied under renowned pedagogue Ellen Mack.</span></p></div><div><br></div></div></div>

<Title>Carlin Truong to join UMBC Music Faculty</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><em>We are delighted to introduce Carlin Truong who will join the UMBC faculty in Fall 2023 as a visiting lecturer of Choral Conducting and Music Education. His work will include directing the UMBC Choral Ensemble "Camerata" and teaching courses in our music education program.</em><div><em><br></em></div><div><img src="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/music/posts/134602/attachments/47948" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"><em><br></em><div><br></div><div><div><span>Carlin Truong 張希 (he/him) is an educator and conductor whose mission is to make music education more accessible to all. As an advocate for social change through the arts, he has directed concerts that address LGBTQIA+ rights, mental health, women’s suffrage, criminal justice reform, and immigration policies. Since his early career, Truong was involved with pop a cappella ensembles, and is consequently known for programing nontraditional repertoire in addition to the beloved canon. He’s presented and led performances at various state and regional conferences throughout the United States, and curates student-centered, innovative, and expressive concerts that engage people on both sides of the stage.</span><br></div><div><em><p><br></p><p>Prior to his appointment in Maryland, he served as the Visiting Director of Choral Activities at Arkansas Tech University where he taught Choral Methods, Ear Training, Choral Arranging, and Intro to Music in addition to preparing the flagship ensemble for their state convention performance. Currently, he is a DMA candidate at the University of Houston under the tutelage of Dr. Betsy Cook Weber. During his time in Houston, he served as the interim director for multiple choral ensembles at UH, and was the assistant conductor for the Moores Opera Center under Dr. Raymond Harvey where he conducted Handel’s <em>Giulio Cesare. </em>Truong also worked at the Houston Symphony Chorus as a chorus preparer, rehearsal conductor, and co-chorus manager. </p><p><br></p><p>From 2016-2020, Truong taught at Clovis East High School in California where he directed the choirs and taught AP Music Theory. In 2020, the Clovis East Choraliers were invited to perform at the California All-State Music Education Conference and Western Division ACDA Conference. Truong has a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting from San José State University where he studied with Dr. Jeffrey Benson. In 2011, he studied abroad at the University of Ghana where he founded a course in contemporary a cappella music while completing his B.A. in Psychology from UC San Diego. He is also an alumnus of the Crystal Children’s Choir where he sang for Dr. Karl Chang. </p></em></div></div></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><p><img src="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/csss/posts/134527/attachments/47912" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></p><p><span>On this episode we hear a rebroadcast of a presentation that formed a part of the </span><a href="https://africanastudies.umbc.edu/conference/may-2023-african-women-civil-wars-and-peacebuilding/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2023 UMBC Africana </a><a href="https://africanastudies.umbc.edu/conference/may-2023-african-women-civil-wars-and-peacebuilding/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Studies Conference</a><span>, organized by</span><span> </span><a href="https://africanastudies.umbc.edu/affilliates/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Gloria Chuku</a><span>, Professor and Chair of UMBC's Africana Studies Department.</span></p><p>The lecture, which took place in May of 2023, was given by keynote speaker Dr. <a href="https://polisci.wisc.edu/staff/aili-mari-tripp/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Aili M. Tripp.</a> Dr. Tripp is Vilas Research Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tripp's research has focused on gender/women and politics, women's movements in Africa, transnational feminism, African politics (with particular reference to Uganda and Tanzania), autocracies in Africa, and on the informal economy in Africa.
