UMBC and nonprofit
AI4ALL have partnered to offer undergraduate students in any major the opportunity to apply to the
Discover AI program, which will take place during the Fall 2023 semester. Programming experience is not required.
The ten-week program starts on September 29 and includes synchronous meetings on Fridays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and asynchronous instruction. No UMBC course credit will be given for participating in the program.

What is AI4ALL Discover AI?
Discover AI is a virtual project-based program in partnership with UMBC that offers a hands-on introduction to computer science and artificial intelligence (AI), ethical issues surrounding AI implementation, and tech careers. In Discover AI, students work in groups on an AI/Machine Learning project based on real-life applications of AI that the students find curious.
Students get access to AI industry leaders and are guided through a roadmap to cultivate a future career in the AI industry. Through research, discussions, and reflection, you will explore the intersectionality of AI with other fields and articulate your own mindful perspective of AI. The following questions are proposed: What are both AI technology's positive and negative implications on society? How can (and does) AI affect communities in today's world?
Why should students consider the AI4ALL Discover AI program?
Upon completion, participants receive an AI4ALL Discover AI certificate of completion and the opportunity to opt-in to
Spring 2024's AI4ALL Ignite - a virtual accelerator that offers Undergraduate students the chance to work on an AI portfolio project with mentorship from AI industry experts. The accelerator also helps participants gain skills to set them apart in the AI internship application process.

Are you interested in playing Renaissance and Baroque music in a collaborative and relaxed setting? Do you want to learn an instrument few people know how to play? The Viola da Gamba is particularly fun for guitarists and string players to learn, though anyone with musical experience can join us. Come get a different perspective on history through hands-on performance!

Paul Ocone INDS Fall 2022 INDS B.A.: Anime and Manga Studies, is the recent recipient of UMBC 2023-2024 Prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Award. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to build lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
Ocone will be conducting 'Otaku (anime/manga fandom) research at Meiji University School of Global Japanese Studies in Japan. He will have the opportunity to further his research with Professor Kaichiro Morikawa, an associate professor at Meiji University and author of: Otaku: persona = space = city.

Join the UMBC Choral Program!
Are you interested in singing at UMBC? We have three choirs at UMBC (Jubilee Singers, Gospel Choir, and Camerata). We welcome singers from all vocal styles and experience levels. The UMBC Choirs are a great way to build community, make friends, and experience excellent music making. All the choirs rehearse and perform in
Linehan Concert Hall, count for course credit, and perform at various UMBC events.
Placement auditions for Jubilee Singers and Camerata will be administered during the first two weeks of class. Please sign up for a time slot
here. Interested singers are also welcome to any rehearsal during the first two weeks, and will be asked to complete a placement hearing immediately after rehearsal.

Heidi Faust Successfully Defends her Dissertation
On August 23, 2023, Heidi J. Faust of LLC Cohort 13 successfully defended her dissertation and earned the title Doctor of Philosophy.
Her virtual defense went very smoothly and she gave a powerful presentation of her dissertation research, "Extending Professional Development through Community: A Case Study of Experienced Non-Native English-Speaking Teachers of Adults Teaching English to Young Learners in Peru."

Undergraduate Data Science Scholars - Call for Applications
Have you worked with social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data?
Are you interested in how to extract useful knowledge from data?
The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) is partnering with the UMBC Department of Information Systems for the UMBC Undergraduate Data Science Scholars Program (DSS) in fall 2022. Students admitted to the program will work as teaching fellows (TFs) and peer mentors. They will also network with UC Berkeley data science students, attend special events, and be mentored by faculty. The DSS program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines, including the social sciences, looking at all aspects of data and its impact on society.
Responsibilities:
- Scholars will work as TFs and peer mentors for undergraduate students in IS296 Foundations of Data Science. The class meets Mo/We 1-2:15 pm. The cohort of DSS scholars will meet as a group with the IS296 instructor. Scholars will be paid $15/hour for specific TF tasks, for 5-10 hours per week in Fall 2022.
- Social science DSS scholars will attend at least two CS3 events in Fall 2022 and/or participate in research initiatives with social science faculty. The scholars will also be expected to attend one mentoring meeting with CS3 faculty.
Background and skills:
Applicants should have knowledge in at least one of the following:
- Analysis of social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data
- Python or one of the data science tools and/or languages (such as Rapid Miner, Weka, Orange, Knime, ML on cloud computing, python)
- Jupyter notebooks with python or taken IS 296 in a prior semester.
