As we approach the closing week of Pedagogy Study Hall,we invite you to join us for a final slate of public programs with Tomashi Jackson and Nia K. Evans, featuring guest scholars, civic advocates, and artists. All events are free and open to the public.

Community Advocates in conversation with Nia K. Evans of the Boston Ujima Project

Dr. Meleny Thomas, South Baltimore Community Land Trust, and Lawrence Grandpre,  Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, in conversation with  Nia K. Evans, Boston Ujima Project. The Boston Ujima Project is a democratic, member-run organization building a cooperative business, arts, and investment ecosystem, with the mission of returning wealth to working-class communities of color.

Join a discussion on investment and disinvestment in the arts and humanities as reflections of broader civic and economic structures with invited guests. Participants will be invited to draw in response to the conversation, and leave their drawings on exhibit in the gallery.

Baltimore Cultural Organizer and National Cultural Agent, Denise Griffin Johnson, introduces audience members to her distinctive style of participatory storytelling, leading participants in a meaningful story-sharing circle event grounded in best practices for community-building communication and inspired by the themes of the Pedagogy Study Hall exhibition.

Denise Griffin Johnson is a Baltimore native and a leader in cultural organizing. She co-founded CultureWorks in 2008, spearheading a major community-led initiative in West Baltimore. As a National Cultural Agent with USDAC, she has led national and regional discussions on justice, belonging, and storytelling. She has collaborated with UMBC and Lafayette College on cultural and economic initiatives and has helped secure over $4 million for West Baltimore's cultural projects. Denise holds a Master of Science from Coppin State University with postgraduate training in Clinical Counseling. She has co-authored academic publications and contributed to major media discussions on community transformation.

Join Stephanie Patrizio, UMBC Student Ambassador for Pedagogy Study Hall, as she presents her research and speculative proposal for heritage preservation in Turner Station entitled "Community at the Core: Libraries, Local History, and the Power of Grassroots Action – A Study of Turner Station." Stephanie was a research assistant to the "Pedagogy Study Hall" evolving timeline, focused on the public library systems of Baltimore City and Baltimore County. She will be participating via Zoom, but participants are invited to join us in person, in the gallery.

Stephanie Patrizio (she/they) is a 2025 graduate of UMBC's Visual Arts program. Originally from Crofton, Maryland and now based in Youngstown, Ohio, Stephanie explores the intersection of the fine arts and humanities with social and environmental justice. Inspired by the goals of the Pedagogy Study Hall project, their research highlights the work of dedicated community members in Turner Station, Dundalk, and their amplified efforts to preserve local history through archival materials, creative expression, and environmental advocacy.

Join us again this Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025, 3-5 pm, at the CADVC gallery as UMBC drawing instructor Alx Velozo leads an interactive workshop, exploring and experimenting with observational line drawing directed by our senses.

Alx Velozo is a trans and disabled sculptor, educator, and performance artist raised in North Florida swamps, currently residing in Baltimore, Maryland. Their installations and performances combine cultural imaginations of illness, touch, the medical industrial complex, and kinesthetic learning models. They most recently received their M.F.A. in Sculpture and Extended media from Virginia Commonwealth University, and previously received a B.F.A. from Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Velozo has exhibited, taught, and facilitated in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Richmond, Miami, and Chilchota, MX. They have taught and consulted for the Baltimore Museum of Art, University of Maryland Baltimore County, George Washington University, Maryland Institute for the Arts, and Baltimore City of Accessible Arts.

Today, Nov. 5th, 3-4 pm, CADVC in collaboration with the Dresher Center will present, "Save Our Block: Public Art/Humanities & Activist Print Culture in Baltimore," both in the gallery and online. (See link and more options to join below).

This discussion, with Nicole King and Markele Cullins, will be joined by Tomashi Jackson and Nia K. Evans on Zoom, and will focus on the collaborative and collective work discussed in the article "Save Our Block: Public Humanities, Zines, and the Connecting the Classroom" in The Routledge Companion to Publicly Engaged Humanities Scholarship (Routledge, 2024).

Markele Cullins is an interdisciplinary artist from Baltimore, MD currently based in Los Angeles, CA. They received their BFA from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and are currently an New Genres MFA candidate at UCLA. They explore and ask questions about the human condition through play, experimentation, and embodied research. Grounded in the Black radical imagination, their practice creates spaces for catharsis and contemplation. Cullins was a founding member of Oak Hill Center for Education and Culture, and co-founded 4C Gallery, an online gallery for artists of color. They also collaborate with communities and students as a designer to create zines preserving Baltimore public history.

Nicole King is a professor in the Department of American Studies and co-director of the Orser Center for Public Humanities at UMBC in Baltimore, MD. Her research focuses on issues of place, power, and the tensions between historic preservation and economic development. She is an editor of the book Baltimore Revisited: Stories of Inequality and Resistance in a U.S. City (Rutgers University Press, 2019 - which features a photo by Cullins on the cover) and co-founder of the Baltimore Traces: Communities in Transition public humanities project. She is currently working on The Ungentrifiable City, a book project focusing on a history of holdouts–the residents and small business owners who challenge extractive development on Baltimore's westside from the 1970s to today. 

Tomashi Jackson is an interdisciplinary artist whose work merges painting, printmaking, video, and performance with research into histories of policy, segregation, and civil rights. Her work has been presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, ICA Philadelphia, the Parrish Art Museum, and in the 2019 Whitney Biennial, and is in the collections of the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, and the High Museum of Art.

Nia K. Evans is Executive Director of the Boston Ujima Project, a member-run cooperative building solidarity economies through cultural and financial infrastructure. With a background in education and policy, Evans's work emphasizes facilitation, access, and democratic participation. She is editor of the forthcoming Pedagogy Study Hall publication.
