Baltimore raises biotech profile, but lags behind D.C. suburbs

Maryland scores high as a home for biotechnology companies. But Baltimore? Not so much.
Maryland has more than 500 core bioscience companies, representing about 8 percent of the U.S. industry, according to the Maryland Biotechnology Center.
But much of that action is near Interstate 270 in Montgomery County on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. That region has the fifth-highest concentration of biotech companies in the U.S. β ahead of Philadelphia and just behind Los Angeles β according to a report from commercial real estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle.
