The ICARE NRT master’s degree is a 2-year interdisciplinary degree program with a dual mission of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice combined with research focused on improving the health of Baltimore Harbor as a socioecosystem. Students will be mentored by a UMBC faculty member and a non-academic scientist from a government agency, non-profit, or industry.

This course explores fundamental questions about the nature of medical care and medical knowledge. It focuses on issues concerning the aims of medicine, our concepts and theories of health and disease, medical evidence and diagnosis, the patient-physician relationship, and a variety of ethical, political, and values questions about medical research and practice. These explorations touch on and draw from the tools of metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of science, ethics, and public policy.

Pre-req: One course in philosophy with a grade of "C" or better or permission of instructor.

History is a particularly useful minor for STEM undergraduates:

1.) It rounds out their education and gives them a competitive edge before medical and graduate school admission committees.

2.) It teaches them crucial skills for excelling in their careers: critical thinking, oral communication, and *writing* skills.

3.) The history minor requires only 18 credits and many of the associated courses also count as GEP credits.

4.) We have a history of science program, for which we are currently offering and developing more courses than in prior years. (Current course offerings include “Environmental History,” “History of Medicine,” “Ancient Science and Technology,” “Images of Science and Technology in Cinema and Media,” “Darwinism: The Evolutionary Perspective,” “Medicine and Health Care in China,” “History of Science to 1700,” “History of Science since 1700,” and “Social History of American Medicine.”)
