Visit Biology for the 50th Anniversary Celebrate Science! with CNMS

UMBC celebrates its 50th Anniversary this weekend! To honor this amazing achievement, the Department of Biological Sciences is teaming up with Mathematics/Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, and the rest of CNMS to bring you "Celebrate Science with CNMS!" This is will be a series of exciting, hands-on activities for people of all ages, panel discussions, poster presentations, giveaways, and an alumni reception.

The event kicks off from 1-6pm in the House of Grit Thinkers Tent located on the parking lot next to the PAHB. Celebrate Science! continues in the science departments from 2-4pm with more family-friendly activities and an "Ask the Experts" panel. See the attached flyers for information on locations and specifics.

Before the campus-wide picnic, visit UC312 for a CNMS Alumni Re-connection reception from 4-5pm. Meeting with current and retired faculty, as well as alumni and current students.

Dr. Javier Rivera Guzman will be our new Lecturer with a focus in Cell Biology. Dr. Rivera Guzman received his PhD. from the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease. While at UNC, he participated in their Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award program, which is a combined research and teaching postdoctoral fellowship. As an IRACDA trainee, he taught at to undergraduate colleges in the Chapel Hill area--Meredith College and Johnson D. Smith University--where he taught Cancer Biology, Cell  Biology, General Biology, and scientific ethics. This semester, he will be teaching BIOL 300L (Cell Biology Lab) and BIOL 430 (Biological Chemistry).



Dr. Jewel Daniel is a visiting instructor, replacing Dr. Sarah Leupen who is spending the academic year i the Czech Republic on a Fulbright Fellowship. Dr. Daniel graduate Magna cum Laude with a Biology B.S. from the City University of New York and received her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the Johns Hopkins University Department of Pathology and a graduate research assistant in the University of Virginia's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics. Before coming to UMBC, Dr. Daniel was an Adjunct Professor at the Community College of Baltimore County teaching Biology and Chemistry courses. She is teaching BIOL 233 (Nutrition & Health) and BIOL 307 (Human Physiology) this semester.

Evan G. Cameron, Ph.D., a former graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences at UMBC, was recently awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) for postdoctoral research training at the University of California San Diego.  Dr. Cameron received his Ph.D. degree in Biological Sciences from UMBC in 2014 under the direction of Dr. Phyllis R. Robinson. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California San Diego, where he studies survival and regeneration of the visual system with the goal of reversing the regenerative failure seen after injury and in neurodegenerative diseases like glaucoma. The postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Health will allow Dr. Cameron to continue his research at Stanford University with his postdoctoral mentor and newly appointed chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, Dr. Jeffrey Goldberg.

Dr. Cameron received his B.S. degree from Towson University and M.S. and Ph.D. from UMBC. While at UMBC, he was supported by the NIH Chemistry-Biology Interface Fellowship.
