Updated Pass/Fail Grading Policy for Majors
for BIOL, BIOC, BIOE, and BINF majors/minors
To students enrolled in BIOL, BIOC, BIOE or BINF major or minor programs:
I am writing as Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, and in consultation with the Undergraduate Program Directors of these programs and with other CNMS Chairs (Chemistry & Biochemistry, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics) to announce changes to grading policies for the Spring 2020 semester.
The CNMS departments have considered whether major or minor courses could be taken using P/F grading and whether a grade of P would allow the course to be used to satisfy prerequisites for further courses. There are arguments on both sides of this question but the four departments recognize that in the current situation students may find that they cannot achieve their normal level of mastery of course curricula and might therefore see their grades slip. Since this results in part from our inability to provide the same level of training while adapting to online instruction, we feel that we must provide special consideration in grading this semester.
The four departments join in agreeing that P/F grading in all BIOL, CHEM, MATH, STAT and PHYS courses required for BIOL, BIOC, BIOE and BINF can be taken P/F during the Spring 2020 semester and that a P grade will meet the prerequisites for any further courses in these majors.
According to Spring 2020 policies, you will be allowed to change a passing letter grade to P after your letter grades are made available at the end of the semester. There is no need to change your grading to P/F at this point.
Please recognize that it is possible that you may find that P grades will not be acceptable for whatever post-graduate training program you might want to apply for in the future. We have inquired of some professional programs, for example, and have found a variety of responses. If you receive a letter grade normally deemed appropriate for these programs it may be in your interest not to change it to P.
We do not have information about courses in other departments that might be taken for credit toward our degrees. Please check with instructors or representatives of other programs before making the decision to take their courses P/F. Also, the Physics Department has not agreed to accept P grades for courses beyond the four normally taken in our majors (PHYS 111/112 and 121/122).
All CNMS departments recognized that it was in the interest of all students to be given this option during these trying times. This system is only in operation for this semester, and should revert to the normal process for subsequent semesters and summer sessions.

Appointment Tutoring, Math and Science Center Tutoring, and Writing Center tutoring are all available online through appointment.
Booking an appointment is easy!
1. Go to umbc.go-redrock.com and log in.
2. Under “search availability,” choose the type of tutoring that works for you:
a. Subject tutoring 1: Appointments must be requested up to 30 minutes in advance
b. Subject tutoring 2: Appointments must be requested up to 24 hours in advance
c. Writing Center: For all writing assignments at UMBC.
***Can’t find your class? Be sure to check both subject tutoring schedules**
3. Pick the course you would like to be tutored in and choose an available time slot that works for you.
4. Finalize the appointment and check your email for confirmation.
5. Your tutor will email you 5-10 minutes before the session with a link to collaborate on a tutoring platform.

Research Graphics Open House February 26!
Meet the new manager, Melissa Penley Cormier, M.F.A. '17
The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences is pleased to formally announce the arrival of Melissa Penley Cormier, M.F.A. ‘17, as the manager of Research Graphics, a core facility within the college that offers research-related printing, imaging, and graphic design services to the entire UMBC community.
Ms. Cormier earned an M.F.A. from UMBC's Intermedia and Digital Arts program and a B.F.A. from Radford University. She most recently gained experience in the Department of Visual Arts as a professional staff program specialist, graduate program coordinator, and an adjunct instructor of drawing and visual concepts courses.
Both artistically and professionally, Ms. Cormier actively collaborates across the disciplines of art and science to better inform her work and feed her enthusiasm. Her work was recently published in a collection by Aperture in Seeing Science: How Photography Reveals the Universe by Marvin Heiferman. In addition, she was recently asked to speak on a panel at Brilliant Baltimore about her collaborative works in The Light Ekphrastic, an online journal founded by UMBC's Jenny O'Grady, which pairs writers and artists together to create new works.
Ms. Cormier is active in both the UMBC and broader Baltimore arts communities through participation in organizations such as the PSS Mentoring Program and the Program Advisory Committee (PAC) of Maryland Art Place. The PAC is comprised of nominated Maryland area artists and arts professionals who provide analyses and responses to proposals and annual exhibitions several times a year. The PAC is also responsible for advising the organization on contemporary art trends and best practices.
Ms. Cormier’s experience with photographic processes and printing techniques, as well as her personal interest in nature and the sciences, makes her a great fit and enthusiastic resource to anyone in the wider UMBC community searching for expertise in imaging and design to support their research, promote their lab's mission, and explore visual projects.
CNMS is pleased to offer a Research Graphics Open House for community members who would like to learn more about how Research Graphics can support their work.

Professor Emerita Suzanne Rosenberg
Named 2020 Distinguished Fellow of AAI
Professor Emerita Suzanne Ostrand-Rosenberg was just named a 2020 Distinguished Fellow of The American Association of Immunologists (AAI).
"This program recognizes members for distinguished careers and outstanding scientific contributions as well as their service to AAI and the immunology community. It honors active, long-term members (25 or more years) who have demonstrated one or more of the following: excellence in research accomplishment in the field of immunology; exceptional leadership to the immunology community in academia, foundations, nonprofits, industry, or government at a national or international level; notable distinction as an educator. Election as a Distinguished Fellow will occur annually and is among the highest honors bestowed by AAI." -- AAI website
Dr. Rosenberg began as an assistant professor at UMBC in 1977 and retired from the university in 2018. She was the Robert & Jane Meyerhoff Professor of Biochemistry from 2000-2018. Since leaving UMBC, she has worked with the University of Utah, Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Research Assistant (Part-Time)
The Ophthalmic
Research Laboratory at Coppin State University is looking to hire a part-time
(30hrs/week) research assistant to work on projects pertaining to
oxidative stress in the neural retina. Applicants must have a B.S. or M.S.
in Biology/Biochemistry/Molecular or Cell Biology with at least 2 years of
experience in conducting routine molecular biology experiments and biochemical
assays.
The candidate should
have advanced level experience in performing independently the
following research techniques/methodologies/instrument use:
·
Cell and tissue culture
techniques
·
Preparation of
media/solutions of appropriate concentrations and composition
·
Molecular biology
methodologies: DNA and RNA purification, AGE, PAGE, Gel imaging, designing
primers, qPCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry
·
Spectrophotometry,
microplate reader
The candidate will be responsible for
documenting all experimental details, perform data analysis, and maintain
equipment logs. The candidate will also be responsible for tracking inventory
and for day-to-day operation and maintenance of the lab.
