Rosetta Commons REU: A Cyberlinked Program in Computational Biomolecular Structure & Design 

Interns in this geographically-distributed REU program have the opportunity to participate in research using Rosetta Commons software. The Rosetta Commons software suite includes algorithms for computational modeling and analysis of protein structures. It has enabled notable scientific advances in computational biology, including de novo protein design, enzyme design, ligand docking, and structure prediction of biological macromolecules and macromolecular complexes.

Students learn the inner details of PyRosetta and community coding environment. Students research in a molecular modeling and design laboratory, developing new algorithms and discovering new science.

*This program will be administered virtually in the unfortunate event of a resurgence of COVID-19.

REU in Nanotechnology for Biology and Bioengineering- Students majoring in the STEM fields participate in research projects in the exciting and rapidly growing area of nanobiotechnology, a place where biology, medicine, and nanotech meet. Research areas include:

·         Engineering for Cancer Therapies

·         Stem Cell and Regenerative Engineering

·         Diagnostic Tools Engineered for Early Detection

Students receive hands-on graduate level laboratory research experience and guidance from faculty and graduate student mentors. The program includes professional development activities, social activities, and off-campus housing,

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life, in partnership with the Student Government Association and the Graduate Student Association, is coordinating UMBC’s campaign to encourage every member of our campus community to “cast your whole vote” in Election 2020. “Casting your whole vote” means committing fully to building strong, inclusive, just communities in which everyone can thrive, before, during, and after the election. 

 

We hope you will participate in this campaign, which will launch on Tuesday, September 22nd (National Voter Registration Day), by doing the following:

 

• Register or check your registration and make a voting plan using the tools at ALL In to Vote;

• take the ALL In to Vote pledge (and help put UMBC atop the national leaderboard), and share that you did (this is open to students, faculty, and staff);

• plan to attend the programs featured on thisElection 2020 Events flyer(and RSVP where required); 

• spread the word to your UMBC networks using the resources in the UMBC Cast Your Whole VoteToolkit; and

• share the Toolkit with people at UMBC who may want to support the Cast Your Whole Vote campaign.

In collaboration with the First-Generation Network, Off-Campus Student Services is incredibly excited to announce the First-Generation Peer Mentoring Program (FGPMP). FGPMP is designed to support the success of current first-time and full-time first-generation students at UMBC. Students that take part in this program can expect to meet other first-generation students and become a part of a large, supportive community that works to share resources, find lasting friendships and connections, and create an impactful college experience. We are looking for students from each of the different colleges at UMBC to support other first-generation students in acclimating to and thriving through the experience of being a Retriever.

Participants of the FGPMP will have the opportunity to take part in a series of activities and workshops designed to enrich students both personally and professionally. Some additional benefits of taking part in the FGPMP include:

Alizay Rizvi is a senior Biological Sciences major, and a URA Scholar.

Title of your research project: Characterizing the gene regulatory networks controlling planarian fission. 

Describe your project: Planarians are worms that can reproduce asexually by undergoing fission, a poorly-understood process that results into two separate pieces each regenerating a complete new worm. The overall goal of my project is to characterize the genes that control planarian fission behavior. The specific aims include the design of a protocol to obtain planarian worms that are about to fission and experimentally analyze their gene expression patterns with in situ hybridization assays. These results will allow me to characterize the genes controlling planarian fission and validate a mechanistic model of this size-dependent behavior.

Who is your mentor(s) for your project? My mentor for this project is Dr. Daniel Lobo.

How did you become interested in this project?

I was reading about the research being conducted in Dr.Lobos lab on the biological sciences building, and the work really stood out to me. I was fascinated by the phenomenon being studied and was interested in getting involved,

taking part in the research, and getting a deeper understanding of planarian regeneration. 

 What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher? My research has just begun, therefore, I have not hit any roadblocks yet. However, the hardest part about research in general is not getting the results you expected which forces you to come up with alternative explanations. 

What has been the most rewarding part? The most rewarding part has been the knowledge I have gained as a result of the literature review I have conducted as well as through wet lab experiments. 

How will you disseminate your research? I plan on disseminating my research through an URCAD presentation, professional conferences and potentially a journal paper. 

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? My advice to anyone looking to get involved in research would be to look for something that interests you, & you would like to learn more about. There’s something out there for everyone, you just have to explore your options! 

What are your career goals? My long term career goal is to work as a pediatric neurologist. I plan on attending medical school & further specializing in order to achieve my career goals.
