Summer REU BEHAVE
The Biological Basis
of Behavior
The
theme of this program is using comparative models for understanding behavior. The program includes
faculty working on diverse taxa (bats, owls, primates and rodents) to answer
fundamental questions on behavioral biology. Areas of research include
ethology, neurobiology and neuroendocrinology. A unique focus of the program
will be an emphasis on the power of using comparative models when tackling
scientific questions, from evolutionary to mechanistic. A main goal of
this program is for students to gain highly focused insight through research on
specific projects while concurrently placing those activities into the larger
context of biological evolution.

Chesapeake
Conservation Corps
The Chesapeake Conservation Corps is a
one-year term of paid service that places young adults (ages 18-25) with
nonprofits or government agencies to work fulltime in the environmental field.
Throughout the year this program provides real-world experience managing
projects and programs, leadership and professional development training,
mentorship, a support network of young professionals, and other skill-building
opportunities including networking and grant writing. Positions offered by host
organizations are in the fields of environmental restoration, community
engagement, environmental education, sustainable agriculture, energy
conservation, and forestry.

Opportunities in Genomics Research Program (OGR)
The OGR Program focuses on providing students interested in pursuing their PhD with interdisciplinary research in genomic sciences by allowing students to choose from over 30 labs at Washington University. The OGR program is based on three pillars: full-time mentored research, critical training in scientific communication, and community. Opportunities for focused outreach activities to local high school students are also available.

Service Learning in Public History: Death, Disease, & Data

Dr. Nicholas Bonneau
This experiential learning course will introduce students to a variety of historical methodologies employed an active public history and archaeology research project. Students will work with Dr. Bonneau and other members of the Arch Street Project team to study the recently rediscovered burial site at 218 Arch Street, in use from roughly 1692 through 1859. We will research the circumstances of the site¿s use and abandonment, the lives of those interred there, and practices surrounding health, death, and burial in the city of Philadelphia. Students will complete individual and group projects students that combine traditional qualitative research and interpretation with quantitative methods of epidemiological, medical and demographic history, including data management, statistical analysis, hypothesis testing, and presentation of results to both an academic audience and the public. As this project extends beyond traditional areas of historical inquiry, non-history students are encouraged to join in. Areas of possible individual and group research range from the historical (histories of public health, industrialization, gender, labor, religion, and the family) to the biological (disease ecology, health economics, bioinformatics) and more. Not a GEP course. Only for upper level credits.

Save the Date: April 19-25, 2021
Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.
All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at URCAD. Mentors, fellow students, friends, family members, high school teachers and students, graduate school recruiters, and the general public are invited to attend.

** SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT **
We are pleased to announce the opening of applications for this summer's REU Raptor Research Site at Boise State University.
Members of underrepresented groups, individuals with disabilities, veterans of military service, and students from colleges and universities with limited research opportunities are especially encouraged to apply. Students receive a summer stipend, campus housing, and round trip travel to Boise for the 10-week summer experience. There are both laboratory and field opportunities for students to conduct research on birds of prey. Please see our project web site for additional information:
Applications for Summer 2021 participation are due by February 10, 2021, and finalists for participation are typically selected by mid-March.
**Please note that Covid-19 safety protocols are being instituted, and all participants will be required to follow university safety procedures including possible testing, mandatory use of facial coverings, appropriate social distancing, and isolation/quarantine when warranted.
Now that we are heading on to holiday break, this is the perfect time to seek out summer opportunities!
Here are some free and paid health care summer programs available for next summer! Applications are open now! They offer free residential** so applications are welcome from all over the country!
1) Summer Academic Enrichment Program (SAEP) offers you the opportunity to simulate the first year of Dentistry, Medical, Pharmacy, and Physical Therapy Schools incorporating academic course, case studies, presentations, socials, and community service. Its six weeks of rigorous intensive work, clinical experience, community service, fun, and preparation for your respective application season. This program is for Juniors, Seniors, and Post-Bacc students.
Participants Receive: $1500 for participating, travel reimbursement available if you are traveling out of state, and free housing** for duration of program in one of the luxury residence halls here at VCU.

2) Another opportunity now available is the Allied Health Career Exploration (AHCE) .This program is open to ALL college students and 12th Grade High School students. AHCE is a two-week exploration program that provides interactive experiences with Gerontology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nurse Anesthesia, Patient Counseling, Rehab and Mental Health Counseling, Health Administration and Radiation Sciences! 9 Careers that are part of a successful interdisciplinary team in any patient care setting.
Participants Receive: $300 for participating and free housing** for duration of program in one of the luxury residence halls here at VCU.

Explore the ideas and implications of Darwin's work on evolution. Learn how Darwin's theory of evolution inspired painters and novelist. Consider the bitter controversies Darwinism sparked and how his work has been received in different national contexts, including Russia, Egypt, and the U.S.

Sociology of Gender
Winter 2021
Online, asynchronous
This course introduces the key concepts sociologists have contributed to the study of gender. We will examine the origins and development of those concepts and empirical work on the sociology of gender in the last three decades. Intersectional feminist theories and research will be emphasized, as we examine how gender is socially constructed within ethno-racial contexts. Students will also be introduced to global/transnational concerns, studies of masculinities, the body and sexuality studies.
