Opportunities in Genomics Research (OGR) 

Opportunities in Genomics Research (OGR) invites talented and motivated students to participate in our post-baccalaureate (Extensive Study) research programs. The goal of OGR is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue the PhD in genomics and related fields, and the programs is open to students who are members of an underrepresented group as defined by the NIH: https://diversity.nih.gov/about-us/population-underrepresented.

IMET Summer Internship program

Marine and environmental sciences are crucial for the future of human health, food, water and energy. The nine-week internship connects you to a hands-on research project. Interns will receive an orientation to working in a lab, seminars on molecular techniques relevant to fisheries, aquaculture, energy production, and environmental research. Group activities will promote science communication, professional and life skill development.

Baltimore City Teaching Residency

BCTR is an opportunity for individuals from all disciplines and backgrounds to become certified teachers while working as the teacher of record in one of our partner schools. Our Residents participate in an extensive six-week summer training and receive training and coaching through their first year of teaching.

Purdue Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) for Translational Biomedical Sciences

The Purdue PREP is a one-year NIH-funded post-baccalaureate program for individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in the biomedical sciences who have recently completed their baccalaureate degree.  The Purdue PREP program is designed to help prepare individuals who have high scholarly potential and a strong interest in scientific research for entry into competitive doctoral programs and successful completion of a PhD, DVM-PhD, or MD-PhD.   

Participants in the Purdue PREP will prepare individualized development plans for academic and professional goals, participate in a full-year of mentored laboratory research, take one graduate-level course per Fall/Spring semester, and participate in other research and professional development activities.  By the end of the one-year Purdue PREP, participants are expected to apply to a minimum of four graduate programs in the biomedical sciences.  

Applications are now being accepted for the 2021 PREP that will begin early June 2021.  Review of applications will begin April 15st.  Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled.​

This year, we will direct our funding to unpaid interns and volunteers at Maryland-based small businesses and nonprofits that have been impacted by COVID-19, or that serve communities affected by the pandemic.

Congratulations to two Fall 2019 BIOL 300L groups on winning the Small World Initiative’s “Do Something About Antibiotics Challenge.” The challenge brings public awareness to the global antibiotic resistance crisis. As part of the challenge, students make creative projects to bring awareness to the global antibiotic crisis and superbugs. Entries include informational videos, animated shorts, baking, and fundraising.

Jade Phan, Anita Danthi, Julia Corns, and Naomi Corns took a prize from NIH with their storytelling PowerPoint, “Antibiotic Challenger,” bringing humor to a call for action. NIH winners receive invitation to a career event, an opportunity to have one-on-one meetings with NIH scientists, and a congratulatory video from Dr. Anthony Fauci.

For Medical and Dental School Applicants, the UMBC Health Professions Evaluation Committee's (HPEC) Cohort process - which begins with exercises to help applicants prepare the materials they need to complete their professional school application, and results in a Committee/Composite Letter from the HPEC to accompany an applicant's other Letters of Recommendation - is set in motion nearly a year and half before an applicant plans to enter Medical or Dental School. 

The next HPEC Cohort, supporting applicants planning to enter Medical or Dental School in Fall 2022, is about to begin!
