A Research Paper by Dr. Alan R. Shuldiner and Associates Here is a short summary about one of Dr. Shuldiner's papers.
Dr. Shuldiner is a presenter at the Bioethics Panel this Friday and a perfect way to get to know more about him is to have a small look at what he researches. Below is a short summary for one of his articles. Its a great read and not very difficult to understand the scientific verbose. 

Dr. Alan Shuldiner and associates analyzed the effects of a mutation in the E40K gene. Carriers who are homozygous for this gene are seen to have lowers levels of LDL cholesterol (this is referred to as "bad" cholesterol) and, higher levels of HDL cholesterol (this is referred to as "good" cholesterol) and lower levels of circulating triglycerides.
This genomic sequencing was done on an population of approximately 45,000 Amish. 

The main purpose of the article is to study the ANGPTL4 gene, of which the E40K gene is variant of. It is discovered that deactivation of some ANGPTL4 alleles is correlated with decreased risk for coronary heart disease and confers a better lipid profile overall for an individual.

Hello all! This week we will be welcoming three scientists at the Bioethics Panel:


Amber L. Beitelshees, PharmD, MPH, FAHA, FCCP

Dr. Beitelshees is a researcher and assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She specifically studies why there is variability in patients’ response to drug components, a field of study called pharmacogenomics. Her research usually focuses on diabetes and cardiovascular disease.


Yue Guan PhD, ScM, CGC

Dr. Guan is a certified genetic counselor with a PhD in public health. She is mainly focused on researching genetic counseling, genetic literacy, the communication of genetic information and the prevention of diseases based on genomics.

  

Alan R. Shuldiner, MD

Dr. Shuldiner is medical doctor with a specialoty in internal medicine. Dr. Shuldiner has accumulated more than 95,000 citations for his research in genetics. He is also known for studying the Amish, a homogeneous population that is suited for genetic studies. He and his researchers were the first to discover the null mutation in APOC3 gene, whose carriers have an increased chance of living to over 90 years of age!
