International Education Week 2021 (Nov 15-19)
Event submissions open! Let's bring the world to UMBC!
Dear Colleagues,
The Center for Global Engagement and the International Education Week planning committee would like to invite you to participate in International Education Week (IEW) 2021 taking place November 15-19!
A joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education, IEW is an opportunity for campuses to celebrate international education in all its forms: curricular, extracurricular, formal, non-formal and everything in between. International Education Week is for everybody!
The International Education Week committee is encouraging all areas of campus to get involved in IEW 2021. We want to celebrate our international community, support international initiatives on campus, and share international experiences with domestic students and communities they might not otherwise be exposed to.
As you begin thinking about IEW, consider the following:
Events come in a variety of forms, either virtual or in-person. Examples include: presentations, lectures on research or current events, activities (diy/fun), workshops and more.
As you propose an event you will be able to indicate which audiences you would like to target. This could be faculty, staff, current students, prospective students (domestic and international) and/or the wider UMBC community.
Interested in hosting, but not sure how to get started? The IEW committee is here to help you plan next steps.
If you are interested in hosting an event during IEW 2021, please complete this Google Form. Event submissions will be due no later than Friday, October 8th if you wish for the event to be marketed as a part of IEW.

Noon. ﹘ 1 p.m.
University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay A. Perman will host a town hall on campus this Friday, October 1, 2021, from noon to 1 p.m. All students, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to attend in person or virtually to ask questions about UMBC’s upcoming presidential transition.
As he shared in his recent message to the UMBC community, the Chancellor is eager to hear about the background and experience that the UMBC community wants in its next leader, as well as thoughts about the future vision and priorities for the institution.
The town hall will be hosted in the Retriever Activities Center with limited and physically distanced seating. Masks will be required. To attend in person, please register using the link below. Community members can also participate online. |

MSCAC Presents: Climate Research & Policy Youth Conference
Learn more about research happening at UMBC & beyond!
Join MaryPIRG Student Climate Action Coalition and Sunrise UMBC on Sunday, October 3rd from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm EST to hear how professors and graduate students at our universities are interacting and studying the impact of climate in their fields!
The MaryPIRG Student Climate Action Coalition (MSCAC) aims to represent college students across the state and advocate for meaningful climate action, environmental justice, and to empower youth. They are a 100% student-run group with more than 200 active supporters and have representation from most Maryland public universities.
Represented Faculty:
- Joanna Goger, (University of Maryland, College Park)
- Dr. Micheal Lewis (Salisbury University)
- Dr. Can Ataca (University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus)
- Dr. Maggie Holland (University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus)
- Dr. Jonathan Cumming (University of Maryland, Eastern Shore)
Graduate Students:- Gracie Chaney (University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus)
- Jan-Michael Archer (University of Maryland, College Park)
Each professor will have a breakout room and give a presentation about their subject matter and how it relates to climate change. The graduate students will give shorter presentations on their research, and share a breakout room. The event will start with introductions and end with a survey.
Completing the survey makes students eligible to win the following prizes:
- Tickets to the Baltimore Aquarium
- Campsite Reservation at Deep Creek Lake! (2 nights of your choice)
- Adopt a Panda (we will adopt on your behalf, you will get certificate and stuffed animal)

A conversation about issues affecting people at UMBC. Online
Thursday, October 7, 2021 · 5 PM - 7 PM Dinner with Friends will feature engaging, facilitated small-group conversations over dinner that will connect you with other members of the UMBC community. You will spend the evening sharing stories, learning about each other's experiences with important issues affecting UMBC students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and discussing how we can move forward together.
An RSVP is required as spots in these popular virtual conversations are limited. Choose to join a facilitated small-group conversation about one of the following discussion topics:
Building community during and after the pandemic
Supporting mental health in challenging times
Promoting civic agency and engagement between elections
Fostering equity and inclusion

The Sustainable Age is a student journal seeking authors
The Sustainable Age is a student journal founded by students of the North Texas Regional Center of Expertise Network. The journal is seeking volunteer student writers to submit original articles centered on the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
This project is led by students for students. It is focused on educating and raising awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This student-led journal provides an environment for students from different universities across the world to develop academic research concerning different areas like Social Justice, Human Health and Well-being, Philosophy, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, Climate Action, and Business.
Writers can learn introductory level scholarly and peer-reviewed writing methods, supported by an editorial team of volunteer students, faculty, and staff. Every article published in the online journal is related to at least one SDG, is reviewed by at least one person of the editorial review team, and includes at least one cited reference using MLA format. Postdoctoral research position in cancer biology at JHU
The Maynard Lab at Johns Hopkins seeks postdoc students
The Maynard Lab is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to collaborate on current funded projects. Our research involves the investigation of immunobiological factors that contribute to cancer health disparities in racial/ethnic minorities and underserved populations. We also investigate the role of inflammation-associated P2 purinergic receptors in cancer initiation and aggressiveness . Specifically, projects are aimed at therapeutically targeting P2 purinergic receptors for the treatment of aggressive prostate cancer and characterizing P2 purinergic receptors in pancreatic cancer.

Leadershop Series
Begins Sept 21st with the The LeadHERship Problem
The Leadershops series consists of workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and student leaders. This program aims to contribute to the leadership development and ongoing learning of UMBC undergraduate students.
The following are the fall 2021 Leadershops sessions that are being offered for students to register through myUMBC:
This session is about taking a deeper look into the relationship between womxn and leadership. Attendees will learn about how our socialization affects our views regarding our own identity and our capacity to lead. This session will be done online.
The Author of Your Leadership Story is a leadership workshop that focuses on self-authorship; defining and creating you own individual sense of self, and making yourself as you go on your college journey. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.
Attendees will learn about the leadership process through team-building and capitalizing on difference. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.
