Department of History's Annual Robert K. Webb Lecture
Event Today @ 4 PM! Humanities Forum with Kenda Mutongi
For the annual Robert K. Webb Lecture, the Department of History presents:
MATATU: A History of Popular Transportation in Kenya
Kenda Mutongi, Professor of History, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Drive the streets of Nairobi, and you are sure to see many
matatus—colorful minibuses that transport huge numbers of people around the city. Once ramshackle affairs held together with duct tape and wire,
matatus today are name-brand vehicles maxed out with aftermarket detailing. This talk will focus on the various ways in which
matatus offer a window onto the socioeconomic and political conditions of post-colonial Kenya. In their diversity of idiosyncratic designs, they reflect multiple and divergent aspects of Kenyan life—including, for example, rapid urbanization, organized crime, entrepreneurship, social insecurity, the transition to democracy, and popular culture—at once embodying Kenya’s staggering social problems as well as the bright promises of its future.
This event is part of the Dresher Center for the Humanities' Fall 2021 Humanities Forum.

Submit essay for a chance to win the Joseph L. Arnold Prize
Funded Award For Outstanding Writing on Baltimore's History
I am sharing this on behalf of Ida E. Jones, the chair for the 2021 Joseph L. Arnold Prize. I am sharing the call for 2022 submissions on behalf of the Baltimore City Historical Society's Joseph L. Arnold Prize committee. The Arnold Prize is a funded award for outstanding writing on Baltimore's history.
The submission must be unpublished and be a minimum of 15 pages to maximum of 45 pages double spaced typed.
Please consider applying and/or sharing the information with your community.
Hi all,
The GSA is attempting to gather preferences of GSOs in regards to their requesting of funds. In determining a more equitable distribution of funds, the GSA is considering reforms to how funds are granted to GSOs. Please complete one form per organization. Submitting the below information will assist the GSA in understanding how GSOs plan on using funding and will overall benefit GSO fund allocation. We would also like to see what funding GSOs are planning to use for the rest of the semester and Spring 2022. The budget you submit is not formal, nor is it required, but it would be helpful for the GSA to see what type of events/amount of funds organizations are anticipating using.
The attached google form to submit is linked here. Also attached here is a budget template sheet for your organization to fill out. Please make a copy of this template and then upload it to the google form before submitting it.
Please submit this form by Monday, October 25th at 5 pm

Bring your unwanted, unused, and expired prescriptions to the lobby of the UMBC Police station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you are unable to drop in on Saturday, please email Bruce Perry, Deputy Chief of Police, at
bperry1@umbc.edu to set up a time to drop off your medication.

October 19th, at 11 am, and Wednesday, October 20th, at 11 am and 2 pm. These trainings provide the opportunity for GSO members to understand how GSOs operate, how they interact with the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and allow for students to ask questions about funding, hosting events, and other

Construction Project Temporarily Eliminates Spaces in Lot 8
Project to Close Seven Spots from 10/18-10/22
Contractors will be on campus next week to restore the storm water management facility adjacent to Lot 8. The staging area for the project will require the closure of approximately 7 spaces in Lot 8.
