She will provide an overview of the status of women and racial-ethnic minority groups in technology fields and facilitate an interactive discussion about the issues concerning diversity and inclusion in tech, as well as the opportunities for broadening participation in tech education.</p><br><p>Dr. Ireland is an educational psychologist with expertise in culturally relevant pedagogy, transfer student success, and racial and gender identity in computing and engineering education.  She is associate director of the <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Women in Technology</a>, research assistant professor in the Engineering and Computing Education Program, and affiliate faculty in Gender, Women's + Sexuality Studies at UMBC. </p><br><p>Dr. Ireland’s work examines the intersectional nature of social, academic, and occupational identities among underrepresented students in computing and engineering majors, and factors impacting academic motivation and achievement in those fields. She teaches GWST 352: Women, Gender, and Information Technology at UMBC.</p><br><p>Light refreshments will be provided at the time of the discussion.</p><br><p>This event is part of the Women's Center's Women + Gender Minorities in STEM Discussion Series.This series is dedicated to creating space for women and gender minorities in STEM within our Women’s Center community. More discussion topics will take place throughout Spring 2022. Guest speakers are staff and faculty in STEM fields at UMBC.</p><br><p>Due to the updated COVID-19 policy, our space will have a limited number of 15 people in our lounge. Try to arrive early or on time! Unfortunately, we will have to turn people away once it reaches 15 people. Campus Life and Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion &amp; Belonging’s (i3b) Mosaic are bringing back our Multicultural Leadership Cohort Experience (MLCE) which will start its second cohort in a few weeks!  The purpose of the MLE initiative is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify within marginalized backgrounds, particularly in relation to race, ethnicity, and nationality to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, strengths, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers. Unlike the mini-series held in the fall, the spring cohort experience is offered SOLELY for selected applicants (up to 18 undergraduate and graduate students). All locations for meeting dates and times will be announced via email to selected participants and invited through Google Calendar. </span></p><p><span>This spring, we will be exploring the concept of </span><span>Deconstructing Grit and Greatness. </span><span>We will do this in a leadership learning cohort by:</span></p><ul><li><p>Enhancing participants' leader identity and leadership capacity using an identity-conscious lens and student development theories;</p></li><li><p>Increasing participants’ awareness of their personal abilities, identity development, and intersections that shape their story through authenticity, self-reflection, and cultural humility;</p></li><li><p>Exploring the role they play in developing relationships while building intra/intercultural connections;</p></li><li><p>And capitalizing on their unique differences, specifically in relation to their racial, ethnic, national, and other salient identity social groups</p></li></ul><p> <span>The first session will cover a brief overview of the program. However, please note that all session details will be only disclosed to the cohort.     <div class="html-content"><table><tbody><tr><td><p>The Department of American Studies (AMST) at UMBC is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program designed to advance the study of American cultures through research, teaching and service to the campus and community. The Department has four full-time faculty, three part-time instructors and a single Program Management Specialist in charge of the office and program management and administration. We also manage the college-wide Public Humanities minor in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS). The position includes managing the college-wide Public Humanities minor and associated public programming. Responsibilities include performing office duties for the department. Specific duties include: budget and bookkeeping responsibilities; course scheduling and catalog maintenance; tracking enrollment and other department data; processing faculty travel requests; coordinating meetings and logistical details for the department; working with various campus offices for general department functions and organization; providing information to visitors to the department; submitting and monitoring work control requests for facilities issues; directing inquirers as appropriate; coordinating, monitoring and assisting as needed with day-to-day operations of the department and assisting with routine office duties; screening and distributing departmental mail; and performing other duties as assigned.</p></td></tr><tr><th>Required Minimum Qualifications:</th><td><ul><li>Bachelor's Degree</li><li>Two years experience in administrative staff work</li><li>Proficiency with word processing, email, calendar management and financial transactions</li><li>Strong interpersonal skills</li><li>Accurate and timely communication skills</li><li>Excellent organizational and data management skills</li><li>A commitment to diversity and inclusion</li></ul><p><span>Note: </span> Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.</p></td></tr><tr><th>Preferred Qualifications: </th><td><ul><li>Degree preferably in a Humanities field, and some basic familiarity with the broad fields encompassed by American Studies, Public Humanities and/or Ethnic Studies</li></ul></td></tr></tbody></table></div>

Hear perspectives of experienced hiring managers who have hired international candidates in the past. </p><p>·       <em>International Student Career Conference, Session #4: </em><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/careers/events/99832" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Negotiating Job Offer</a>s, online- Thursday, February 24th, 11am-12pm. Dr. Di Maria will provide insight on how to effectively evaluate and negotiate job offers once you have completed the interview process. </p><p><br></p><p><strong>Special Accommodations:</strong> UMBC is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, students, and visitors.  If you would like to request accommodations (e.g., ASL interpreters, captioning, wheelchair access, etc.) for this event due to a disability, please notify us at least two weeks prior to the event.
