UMBC Transitions Digital Badges to Accredible
New platform enhances analytics, sharing, and value
UMBC is transitioning its digital credentialing platform from Parchment Digital Badges (formerly Canvas Credentials/Badgr) to Accredible. This move supports continued growth in microcredentials while expanding how learners can access, share, and build on their achievements over time.
While the platform is changing, the impact for most users should be minimal. Existing badges remain valid, and the overall experience of earning and sharing credentials will feel familiar.
What’s New
With Accredible, UMBC is introducing several enhancements for both microcredential earners and program leads:
- Improved analytics to better understand engagement and outcomes
- Expanded sharing and messaging tools to help learners promote their achievements
- A unified digital wallet where all UMBC credentials can live in one place
- Support for long-term credential curation, aligned with emerging Learning and Employment Record practices
These updates position UMBC to better connect learning with career pathways and support learners beyond a single course or experience.
For Current Badge Earners
If you earned a UMBC digital badge within the past year, you should have received an email from Accredible notifying you that your badge(s) have been re-issued on the new platform.
A few important notes:
- Your original badge on the previous platform is still intact
- This is the same microcredential, now available in Accredible
- You may receive multiple emails if you earned more than one badge
- All future UMBC badges will be issued through Accredible
The transition is designed to consolidate your credentials into a single, more flexible platform while preserving everything you’ve already earned.

In partnership with Google, The National Association of Higher Education Systems (NASH), The University System of Maryland (USM), and the University of Texas System (UT), UMBC is offering a limited number of free licenses to help learners build high-demand skills in fields such as cybersecurity, data analytics, IT support, digital marketing, project management, UX design, and artificial intelligence (AI).
These certificates are 100% online, self-paced, and designed for learners with no prior experience.
Whether you’re a student looking to gain a competitive edge in the job market, an alumnus reskilling for a career transition, or a faculty member wanting to integrate industry certifications into your course, this program provides an accessible, flexible, and career-ready learning experience.
Unlike full Professional Certificates, these specializations typically take 5–20 hours to complete, making them a great option for learners who want to quickly build skills, explore a new field, or strengthen specific areas of expertise.
These specializations provide valuable exposure to industry-relevant tools and practices; however, they do not stack into larger Google Professional Certificates.
They’re ideal if you want to:

0-Credit Practicum Support
Eligible UMBC undergraduate and graduate students may also enroll in a free, 0-credit, pass/fail practicum course (PRAC) to receive additional structure and support while completing their Google Career Certificate.
- Must enroll before February 24, 2025.
- Includes regular reminders, optional check-ins, and curated resources.
- Builds a sense of community with other students working on certificates.
- Details and requirements will be shared in the course’s Blackboard shell.
This practicum is designed to help you stay on track, maintain momentum, and successfully complete your certificate.

About the Bootcamp
This two-day, hands-on workshop (Winter 2026) invites faculty from across disciplines to:
- Explore the purpose and structure of microcredentials at UMBC.
- Map course learning outcomes, assessments, and criteria to microcredentials.
- Align proposals with UMBC’s taxonomy, NACE competencies, and the Microcredential Evaluation Rubric.
- Draft and refine proposals with peer feedback and support from staff and the Microcredential Review Board (MRB).
This bootcamp is tentatively scheduled to take place in-person on January 21 and January 22, 2026.
By the end of the bootcamp, participants will leave with one or more complete proposals ready for MRB submission.
Faculty Preparation
Faculty are expected to come prepared with at least one course that has been previously taught and will be offered again. Bringing a current syllabus, learning outcomes, and key assignments will ensure that the curriculum mapping and proposal design work are grounded in actual teaching practice.
Incentives & Support
Faculty who complete the bootcamp will receive a $1,500 stipend, which covers:
- Full participation in the two-day workshop
- Submission and approval of one or more microcredential proposals by the MRB
- Implementation of approved microcredentials in a for-credit course
- Sharing project outcomes externally (such as a blog post, publication, or Provost’s Symposium presentation)
Breakfast and lunch will be provided both days, with ongoing support available from staff and MRB members after the bootcamp.

Canvas Credentials is Becoming Parchment Digital Badges
On 10/31, Canvas Credentials completes its rebrand
Since March 2021, UMBC has issued digital credentials through Canvas Credentials, a platform that allows learners to earn and share verified badges recognizing their achievements. Following Instructure’s acquisition of Parchment, the Canvas Credentials platform is being rebranded to Parchment Digital Badges.
This update is in name only. The system will continue to function exactly as it does today. You’ll still log in using your same sign-on, and all existing badges, pathways, and workflows will remain unchanged.
The only visible updates you’ll notice are:
- The product name and logo will now display "Parchment Digital Badges"
- In limited instances, the Blackboard integration will appear as “Parchment Badges”
- The web address may update to a new domain (this change will happen over several weeks)
Our
internal FAQs and support materials will be updated by October 31 to reflect the new branding.

Through a partnership between the University System of Maryland (USM) and the National Association of System Heads (NASH), faculty at USM institutions—including UMBC—can enroll in two free, self-paced Google courses on generative AI:
- Google Prompting Essentials helps you master writing effective prompts for generative AI tools. In less than 10 hours, you’ll learn a five-step prompting framework and build a reusable library of prompts—no prior experience required.
- Google AI Essentials provides hands-on training in utilizing generative AI for tasks such as content creation, data analysis, and decision-making. This course lasts less than 15 hours and culminates in an industry-recognized Google credential.
These courses are part of the NASH-Google Career Certificate initiative and are offered in collaboration with the USM Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation. They are 100% online, flexible, and open to faculty from all disciplines.
Two enrollment periods are available this summer:

These certificates are 100% online, self-paced, and designed for learners with no prior experience.
Whether you’re a student looking to gain a competitive edge in the job market, an alumnus reskilling for a career transition, or a faculty member wanting to integrate industry certifications into your course, this program provides an accessible, flexible, and career-ready learning experience.
