UMBC softball head coach Joe French brought in a pair of transfers over the offseason, one of which, junior Kathleen Sharp received the 2012-13 John Stauff Female Scholar Athlete of the Year at the annual National Junior College Athletic Assocation Region XIX awards gala. The award is given to one female student-athlete that excels both in the classroom and on the playing surface.
