Attached is a preliminary list of fall classes in Asian Studies - we'll be going back through the schedule with a fine-tooth comb to make sure we didn't miss any, but in the meantime this might help.
Just as a reminder, we are now in peak advising season - it's time to get yourself cleared for registration, even if you are not ready to register just yet.
For Asian Studies majors and minors, I am your academic advisor - and I am ready and eager to help. To get cleared for this fall, please start by filling out the form here:

ASIA 100 Offered This Fall in Two Formats
There will be both online and in-person sections
Asian Studies majors and minors:
If you need ASIA 100, please take note that the course is ONLY taught in fall semesters. To maximize flexibility this fall, there will be two sections: section one (ASIA 100-01) is an online asynchronous course, and section two (ASIA 100-02) is a completely in-person course meeting Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Please make sure you sign up for the section that fits your needs and schedule best.
The schedule is now out, and I'll be sending around the list of Asian Studies electives available this summer and fall later this week.

Apply for a 2021-2022 URA
Application deadline is May 3, 2021
Applications are now open for Undergraduate Research Awards (URA).
Application deadline: May 3, 2021
URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research, scholarship, or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work.
Applications require a research proposal and mentor statement of support. If you want to discuss possibilities for doing a URA through the Asian Studies program, reach out to me (oyen@umbc.edu or make an appointment to talk here).

On the surge of hate crimes against Asian, Asian-Americans and Pacific-Islanders (AAPI), we want to share updated data and resources with our community.
According to Stop AAPI Hate’s March 2021 national report, 3,795 incidents of discrimination against AAPIs were reported from March 19 to February 28, 2021 via the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center. Below are a few highlights. Visit https://stopaapihate.org/reportsreleases/ for the full national report and other reports.
Verbal harassment (68.1%) and shunning (20.5%) (i.e., the deliberate avoidance of Asian Americans) make up the two largest proportions of the total incidents reported.
Physical assault (11.1%) comprises the third largest category of the total incidents. Civil rights violations — e.g., workplace discrimination, refusal of service, and being barred from transportation — account for 8.5% of the total incidents.
Chinese are the largest ethnic group (42.2%) that report experiencing hate, followed by Koreans (14.8%), Vietnamese (8.5%), and Filipinos (7.9%).
Women report hate incidents 2.3 times more than men.
Businesses are the primary site of discrimination (35.4%), followed by public streets (25.3%), and public parks (9.8%). Online incidents account for 10.8% of the total incidents.

Fall 2021 Advising in Asian Studies
Advising clearance begins on March 22
Dear Asian Studies Students,
Academic advising for Asian Studies majors, minors, or certificate students begins in earnest on March 22.
Here's what you need to do. This semester, we're going to learn from our friends over in Global Studies and try using an online form for planning.

Please fill out this form the best you can. If you know exactly what's going on and what your plans are with no questions or concerns, then once I read your answers I'll clear you for registration.

News and Opportunities
Spring 2021, Volume 1
Here are the upcoming opportunities to present your research or seek funding for internships or study abroad. For questions or to discuss applications and options, please email Dr. Oyen (oyen@umbc.edu) or set up an appointment through Calendly.
TWO UPCOMING DEADLINES:
- The application to apply for Spring 2021 graduation deadline is Monday, February 15.
- The deadline to apply to present at URCAD is also Monday, February 15.
Stipends for Students with Unpaid Internships
If you have an unpaid internship or plan on pursuing one, you may be eligible for a monetary stipend. The UMBC Student Internship and Service Fund is directing their funding to give money to unpaid interns and volunteers of small businesses and nonprofits based in Maryland that have been affected by COVID-19. These stipends range from $1,500 for unpaid interns working 120+ hours this summer, to $750 for unpaid interns working 60+ hours this summer.
The eligibility for these stipends read as follows:
- GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Students must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student returning to UMBC in the fall of 2021
- Students must hold or be planning on pursuing an unpaid position with a Maryland-based small business or nonprofit the summer of 2021
If you are planning to pursue an unpaid position, you must secure one by May 1st, 2021
To apply, you must submit your resume, unofficial transcript, and a personal statement by March 14th, 2021, in UMBCworks.

Applications For The Freeman ASIA Scholarship Are Now Open!
Interested in studying abroad in East or Southeast Asia in 2022 but don't have the financial means to do so? If so, the Freeman ASIA Scholarship would be perfect for your educational exploration.
Students interested in the scholarship should apply by March 30th, 2021 and by the academic term before their study abroad program begins. Applications must be approved by your financial aid advisor and an Education Abroad Advisor before the March 30 due date.

Johns Hopkins University's Macksey National Undergraduate Symposium
The second annual Macksey National Undergraduate Symposium held by Johns Hopkins will be held virtually on April 24th and 25th of this year. This event allows all undergraduate students studying any and all areas of the humanities to gather together and share their humanities research.
Not only will students be able to present their research, but they will be able to work with Hopkins student editors to revise their work into a journal-length presentation to be added to the Macksey Journal.

China-US Scholars Program Application
During the 2021-2022 academic year, the Institute of International Education's China-US Scholars Program will be supporting students and faculty in the arts, humanities, and social sciences to teach, research, or study abroad in the US or China. This is a 5-10 month long program, which begins in the fall of 2021.
Applications for this program will be accepted from March 1st to April 15th, 2021. For more information about the program, your eligibility, and the link to submit your application, visit www.iie.org/CUSP.

If you are a student that has been awarded a Pell Grant and is planning to study abroad in 2022, this scholarship can help you overcome financial constraints that may be prohibiting you from studying overseas.
