Michigan Asian Languages and Cultures Preview Weekend Opportunity to learn more about Ph.D. program

The University of Michigan Asian Languages and Cultures department welcomes applications for its Fall 2019 Preview Weekend: October 31 - November 2, 2019.

The University of Michigan Asian Studies Ph.D. program invites juniors, seniors, recently graduated, or Master's students to visit us for a preview of our graduate program. We are eager to recruit students for this event who will contribute to our department's mission of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in Asian Studies.

 

This event is an all expenses paid opportunity to explore graduate education, participate in admissions workshops, meet world-renowned faculty and current graduate students, and get a taste of life in Ann Arbor. During preview weekend visit, students will learn about:

the admissions process

fully funded graduate programs

developing a research project

advanced language training

selecting a faculty advisor

what graduate school is like and how it all works


Eligibility:

Please apply if you are a US citizen, permanent resident, or a DACA recipient. To qualify for this program, you must meet one or more of the following criteria: 1) come from an educational, cultural, or geographic background that is underrepresented in graduate study in Asian studies; 2) have demonstrated a sustained commitment to diversity in the academic, professional, or civic realm, specifically efforts in the U.S to reduce social, educational, or economic disparities based on race, ethnicity, or gender, or to improve race relations in the U.S.; 3) have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances; 4) are a first generation U.S. citizen or are the first generation in your family to graduate from a four-year college or university. 

 

Applicants should have a high level of academic achievement and some background in one or more of the following language and culture areas: Chinese studies, Japanese studies, Korean studies, Southeast Asian studies, or South Asian studies. The mission of 1990 Institute is educating the next generation of Americans and Chinese to broaden and increase mutual understanding. In keeping with our mission, we are proud to announce an essay contest for all undergraduates which emphasizes the importance in today’s world of understanding modern China with depth.

Three prizes of $1000 ($3000 in total) will be awarded to one student in each of the following categories based on exceptional research and scholarship, subject to the requirement that the topic must be about or relate to modern China, focused on the following areas:

• Economics
• Women’s Rights 
• Technology

Submissions are accepted now through May 31, 2019.

Winners will be announced July 15, 2019 and will have the opportunity to present their papers at CHINA NOW, a 1990 Institute seminar on modern China in Redwood City, CA July 26 and 27, 2019.

Wolves, Whales, and ‘Black Swans’: An Environmental History of Japan

HIST 494/713 will be offered Thursdays from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. Instructor: Dr. Constantine Vaporis

This seminar examines the evolving relationship between forms of power, including the state, and nature in the emergence of modern Japan. Through our readings and discussions, we will explore the ways in which power has shaped relationships with natural and unnatural landscapes on the Japanese archipelago.
