    <p>The University of Michigan Asian Studies Ph.D. program
    invites juniors, seniors, recently graduated, or Master's students to visit us
    for a preview of our graduate program. We are eager to recruit students for
    this event who will contribute to our department's mission of promoting
    diversity, equity, and inclusion in Asian Studies.</p>
    
    <p> </p>
    
    <p>This event is an all expenses paid opportunity to explore
    graduate education, participate in admissions workshops, meet world-renowned
    faculty and current graduate students, and get a taste of life in Ann Arbor.
    During preview weekend visit, students will learn about:</p><p>the admissions process</p>
    
    <p>fully funded graduate programs</p>
    
    <p>developing a research project</p>
    
    <p>advanced language training</p>
    
    <p>selecting a faculty advisor</p>
    
    <p>what graduate school is like and how it all works</p><p><br></p>
    
    <p>Eligibility:</p>
    
    <p>Please apply if you are a US citizen, permanent resident, or
    a DACA recipient. To qualify for this program, you must meet one or more of the
    following criteria: 1) come from an educational, cultural, or geographic
    background that is underrepresented in graduate study in Asian studies; 2) have
    demonstrated a sustained commitment to diversity in the academic, professional,
    or civic realm, specifically efforts in the U.S to reduce social, educational,
    or economic disparities based on race, ethnicity, or gender, or to improve race
    relations in the U.S.; 3) have experienced financial hardship as a result of
    family economic circumstances; 4) are a first generation U.S. citizen or are
    the first generation in your family to graduate from a four-year college or
    university. </p>

    <p>Applicants should have a high level of academic achievement
    and some background in one or more of the following language and culture areas:
    Chinese studies, Japanese studies, Korean studies, Southeast Asian studies, or

     are excited to share that Dr. Constantine Vaporis, Founding Director of
     the Asian Studies Program, will be offering a new course for Fall 2019.<br> <br> Wolves, Whales, and ‘Black Swans’: An Environmental History of Japan<br> <br> HIST 494/713 will be offered Thursdays from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. Instructor:  Dr. Constantine Vaporis<span><br> <br>
     This seminar examines the evolving relationship between forms of power,
     including the state, and nature in the emergence of modern Japan. 
    Through our readings and discussions, we will explore the ways in which 
    power has shaped relationships with natural and unnatural landscapes on 
    the Japanese archipelago. Spanning the seventeenth to the twenty-first 
    century, this seminar will cover topics such as: the influence of 
    traditional values and practices on contemporary ecologies; 
    human-animal-environment relations; the history of ideas about the 
    natural world; public health and industrial pollution; natural and 
    unnatural disasters, including earthquakes and nuclear accidents; and, 
    the meanings of the Anthropocene for Japan’s history.</span></span></span></div>
