UMBC Asian Studies Council of Majors (ASCOM) will participate in a video exchange collaboration with Whoval, a famous denim manufacturer located in Kurashiki, in Okayama prefecture in Japan. This project may be of interest to those in the Japanese classes at UMBC, as well as those who have an interest in Japanese business culture, or textile production. 

First, to introduce students to the project, our team of officers will present about the process of indigo textile dyeing and the history of Kojima Jeans Street in Kurashiki. Then, through video exchange, we would ask any interested students to create follow up questions in the form of a video (either in Japanese or English) to send to Whoval. Lastly, Whoval’s representatives will send a return video with answers to any questions students may have.

Additionally, we will provide free shuttle transportation for students attending classes at Shady Grove.

The Partnerships for Listening and Action by Communities and

Educators (PLACE) is a multi-campus collaborative initiative of

Bringing Theory to Practice (BTtoP). The project is supported by a

grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to the Association of

American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).

PLACE Community Fellows at UMBC will collaborate with faculty,

staff and community members in Baltimore City to apply humanities

methods to address community issues. In addition to developing

skills in humanities methods and community development, students

will earn a stipend to cover refreshments and transportation

expenses during fieldwork.

The project is looking for students in the humanities or humanistic social

sciences with a strong interest in community development. The ideal

nominee can work well in diverse groups and in direct collaboration

with community members. Since participation implies a two year

commitment, nominees must be in their freshman, sophomore or junior

year (or have two years left at UMBC by the start of fall 2019).

Potential candidates must also have a GPA of at least

2.5.
