Moving Classes and Advising Online
Resources for the next few weeks
Asian Studies majors/minors/certificate students:
As you know, classes are cancelled on Thursday and Friday (March 12 & 13), and we'll be moving classes online for at least two weeks following Spring Break.
All campus events are cancelled until April 6.
Advising and clearance for Fall 2020 registration (which is scheduled to begin April 6) will continue electronically. I will send out instructions for formats and sign-ups as soon as I settle on a platform. First pick will go to those who have already signed up for an in-person advising slot, and then I'll make the whole schedule available to everyone.
If you have questions or concerns about anything related to your academic program, future plans, or how this transition will work, please do not hesitate to contact me.

hours for your shopping convenience before spring break:
Tuesday 4 to 6 p.m.
Thursday 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Friday 11 to 1 p.m.

visit us in Sherman 205, and please pass the word to others who may be
in need of food and personal care items. Additionally, you can also stop
at our food zones to pick up pre-made food bags.

Lecture on Climate Change and Asia TOMORROW!

Dear Asian Studies Students,
Do not miss this unique opportunity! Tomorrow, Dr. Jahiel, professor of Environmental and International Studies at Illinois Wesleyan University, will be joining us for a talk titled, “Changing Landscapes, Changing Tides: The Transboundary Impacts of Climate Change and Asian Economic Development.”
We'll have snacks and tea available during and after the talk. Come on over to Commons 329 tomorrow afternoon; the talk begins at 4:00.

Priority goes to Juniors and Seniors, as well as those planning study abroad, internships, and post-graduation plans. If you are a returning freshman or sophomore who just needs clearance to register, consider seeing CAHSS advisor James Hamilton or Dr. Nianshen Song in the History Department. Everyone else should plan to come meet with Dr. Oyen.

When you log in via your UMBC email, you can simply pick your slot. If you need to cancel for any reason, simply delete the appointment from your calendar, and it will automatically notify Dr. Oyen.
Most meeting slots are between the hours of 10 and 3, but alternate times can be arranged by direct request.
All meetings are assumed to be in Dr. Oyen's office in FA549, unless you request an alternate location. If you prefer not to meet on the 5th floor given the lack of elevator access, please contact her directly (oyen@umbc.edu), and she will find an alternate location for your advising session.

Scholarship for Study in Taiwan 2020-2021
Applying for the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship due March 13
The government of the Republic of China on Taiwan makes available a certain number of scholarships every year for foreign students who would like to study Chinese there.
The 2020-2021 Applications are now open. To apply, please submit your complete application FIRST to Dr. Oyen or Ms. Rosenthal in the Asian Studies Program offices by March 13. We'll then bundle the applications with our recommendation for submission to TECRO.
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Oyen (
oyen@umbc.edu). Dr. Oyen is also available during her office hours next week (Tuesday, 11:30-1:00 and Thursday, 1:00-2:00) or by appointment to help you with your application or answer questions about studying in Taiwan.

Free Pizza - Join Asian Studies Council of Majors (ASCOM)
Friday, February 7, 2020 Fine Arts 558 South Noon - 1 p.m.
Please join ASCOM tomorrow from noon until 1 p.m.
"The meeting will be a general meeting where we discuss
what ASCOM is, the officers, the resources we provide, and what we do
during a typical meeting. Victoria Defebbo will be giving a presentation on Pokemon and
their origins in Japanese Folklore/mythology."
There will be free pizza. Please bring your own beverage. Snacks and desserts will be provided for this first meeting of the semester.
Free books will be available for anyone who would like them at the meeting tomorrow.
Please come out and meet or reconnect with the other students in the program.
Please note that the elevator in Fine Arts is still out of service. Please take the North elevator (closest to the pond) to the 4th floor and walk around to the South side (closest to the Engineering Building) and walk up to the 5th floor.

Eligibility Requirements:
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or
university in the U.S. (graduate students are not eligible)
- Study abroad program must be eligible for credit at the
student’s home institution
- Study abroad program must be at least 4 weeks (28 days) in
country/countries
