The middling students associates with the social constructing of race, as it  still serves a social utility. Moreover, it cultivates a status symbol, means of superiority/inferiority, sense of belonging, apparatus to solidify a certain convictions, means of re framing the fear within the individual  etc. 

Moreover, why does race still matter, why do people still believe in the concept; isn't culture much more important that the concept of race?
