On March 09, 2011, witha vote of 18-1 Republicans, Wisconsin senate approved a bill Gov. Scott Walker's proposed restrictions on collective bargaining for
public employees today, getting around a Democratic walkout by
stripping financial provisions from the bill.
On February 21, 2011, Gov. Scott Walker, was asked in an interview with Chris Wallace of Fox News,
"If it's a money issue and balancing the budget and they are willing to concede on the money issues, why isn't that enough? Why do you also have to take back some of their collective bargaining rights?"
responded with "they" [Democratic State Senators ] are using the collective bargaining issue as a "red herring". He further stated,
"I want to give those local governments the tools they need to balance the budget now and in the future. They can't do that with the current collective bargaining laws in the state."
According to CNN, "His bill, which already had passed the state Assembly, would bar public workers other than police and firefighters from bargaining for anything other than wages." Also, raises would be capped to the rate of inflation, unless state voters approve. The legislation also would require unions to hold a new certification vote every year, and unions would no longer be allowed to collect dues from workers' paychecks.
