According to a story picked up by animation-industry news, "Cartoon Brew", the new Nickelodeon animated film, Rango, is being targeted by "Smoke-Free.org" for portraying a character smoking a cigarette.
"Smoke-Free.org" took out an ad in newspapers to call for recent PG films that have smoking, to be re-rated with and "R" rating. Films such as Alice in Wonderland, The Illusionist, as well as Rango are being criticized due to "scientific evidence that how much smoking kids see on screen predicts if they start smoking as adults."
In defense of the film, people have noted that only the villain is depicted smoking which therefore counters its depiction, however he organization claims that "research finds that bad guys has more influence over kids then good guys."
I think that to some extent, their concern is legitimate, but an R-rating? Really? What do you think?
