LBGT Violence and Harrasing
posted over 13 years ago
Hi My Name is Patria and I am an incoming freshman. I keep seeing posts about harassments and (little) violence against known and out of the closet members of the LBGT community. I am slightly worried about being out and known and the harassment I and other unknowing people might face.
I am "used" to it... People liked to spray paint "faggot" on the inside of my locker and pass me notes (yes, we were high schoolers going on fifth grade) Telling me that no matter what my religion, I was going to hell because No God loved queers. But I Lied! because no natter how many times I saw words painted on or in my locker , no matter how many notes I got... each time it hurt, although a little less each time.
My mother believes I am gay and hates that thought enough to recommend that " Going into the military might ""take"" the gayness out of you" . In other words
( What I heard) "go into the military.. maybe some man will rape you and maybe you'll like it so then I can be proud to show you off to my friends instead of telling them I only have one child, my perfectly straight son."
What I really want to know is your thoughts on the treatment of LBGT and any and all minorities on campas... I know we are in college , that we are supposed to big boys and girls now, but some of the stuff I see on here lead me to believe otherwise..
Thanks for reading and any thoughts on this matter

Hi Patria, UMBC is a diverse campus and we embrace all of our students. The Freedom Alliance and the QUMBC are two very active club organizations and they sponsor many great events to spread and promote awareness on campus. The Mosaic Center holds weekly discussions about different cultures and the LGBT communities. Many student leaders are part of the LGBT communities. Some of the comments you see on myumbc do not reflect that. While most of us are embracing, there are a few who are blinded by their ignorant yet arrogant fervor and they only dare to voice their mind by cowardly hiding behind an avatar on the internet. A phantom without much substance or purpose; the boy who cry wolf, if you ask me. But college is about growth, so maybe one day they will change their ways. Patria, When you arrive in the fall, you will find UMBC to be one of the most accepting and welcoming college campuses.
