Freshman Housing Packing
I am wondering if you guys could tell me what items would be useful to bring for my first year... like trash cans or how many towels and should i bring a clothes basket or a collaspable hampers... i am going to start my shopping now at Target, five below, walmart... Any help on what to bring, how much to bring, what size something should be...
Also i know we dont have book shelves but is there space under the bed to store extra stuff? I would like to bring some of my books...
How big are the dressers in general? How many drawers, how wide, and how deep do they run?
Any help is greatly appreciated... Please keep in mind that I do not plan to purchase items from the umbc store unless i forget something or such...
Thanks!!

#1: You can only have one fridge per room, per Housing Policy, so be sure to arrange who will end up bringing theirs when talking to a roomate. Keep in mind that you are not allowed to bring a microwave unless you rent a "microfridge" (which is basically a fridge-microwave combo appliance) through ResLife. But you don't really need a microwave in your room. The lounges on each floor have a microwaze and stove top.
#2: There is plenty of room under the bed to store stuff, but I usually keep my books on the shelf above each desk. It can hold between 10 books (textbooks) and twenty books (short novels). The dresser closet is huge, as are the dresser drawers, of which there are three.
#3: There is one window per room. Be sure to get on campus EARLY if you want to snag it and sleep or work next to the window, or if you keep any plants.
#4: I would encourage you to bring your own trashcan (I think sharing is nasty), and your own shower curtain. The dorms come with said curtains, but they barely make it to the floor, and after bath flooding is common if you don't bring your own.
#5: You may want a cable cord if you watch cable TV, which is provided in all of the dorms, and probably an ethernet cord as well. Yes, the dorms have wireless, but if too many people use it at once, the internet can be painfully slow, in which case I like to have the freedom to connect to ResNet.
#6: Bring at least a few personal effects to keep things "homey" and some room spray to keep it smelling nice. Incense and candles are not allowed.
#7: Toilet paper is provided to you, unlimited and free, by reslife, so unless you have an ultra sensitive bottom (the toilet paper we get gets the job done, but isn't exactly high quality) buying paper is a huge waste of money.
#8: Bring a jar of quarters for laundry. The card readers NEVER work, and unless you want to go on weekly adventures to find the change machine that still has change in it, I'd come prepared.
That's all I can think of for now. Good luck shopping!
