Police make arrests in recent string of bicycle thefts

Bike Thefts: During the past month11 bicycles have been stolen at UMBC almost exclusively from Residential areas. Earlier this semester Residential Students were alerted to this trend and asked to take measures to protect their bicycles and to alert police to any suspicious activity.
Arrest: At approximately 11:30p.m. on September 15th a student alerted police to several suspicious individuals near the bicycle rack at Harbor Hall. UMBC Police who were already in the area were able to apprehend and arrest two non-students for the attempted theft of a bicycle. The police also recovered bolt cutters from the suspects. Subsequent investigation led to the recovery of a bicycle in Baltimore City. The investigation is ongoing and police expect to identify further suspects. It is believed that the arrested individuals were responsible for most, if not all, of the recent thefts.
Please keep in mind:
- Easy targets: Bikes are easily stolen and ridden away.
- Serial Numbers: Most owners do not record their bike’s serial numbers. These can be easily accomplished by registering your bicycle with the UMBC Police by calling 410-455-5555.
- Leads: If you have any information on the thefts of these bikes, please share with Detective Smith of the UMBC Police at smithcht@umbc.edu.
- If you see something, say something: please report all suspicious persons or activities to the police department at 410-455-5555.

- Get a lock and properly secure your bicycle.
