Incoming CS/CMPE/IS(any programming major) student look here
posted about 10 years ago
Hey all, I'm currently a 5th year undergrad at UMBC majoring in CMPE. I'm almost done my time here and have been thinking about ways to give back to the community. Last year I did a dozen or so free/cheap laptop repairs on campus when I had time. This year I'd like to help out students struggling with programming. To give you guys an idea that I am actually semi competent, I've got about 5 years experience with Java, 2 or 3 with python, and a year or so with JavaScript. Just finished up a summer internship as a Software Engineer and will be starting full time with the company in the spring. I'll be TA'ing CS 201(python) this fall, but I wanted to help outside the classroom as well if possible.
I remember my first semester at College Park coming out of high school with 0 programming experience. The course was absolutely brutal, the professor's were mostly helpless(luckily UMBC has a great CS staff) and I was completely lost. It's a tough and daunting subject to first crack into. If anyone here gets stuck on something in the fall or just needs some input/advice(even career questions) feel free to post here or email me at jwees1@umbc.edu. If you email me just list the subject as programming help or something similar. Also, I can't and won't help you with graded projects(department policy) but that doesn't mean I can't help you brush up on the programming basics that will let you get the job done.
*note for 202 students, I don't know C++ currently but that should be changing soon and the general concepts of programming hold true throughout almost all languages, don't hesitate to hit me up either.
*Data structures is starting to approach the limit to my CS knowledge I feel comfortable helping with. I will not guarantee any information I give you up to/past this point, but might be helpful to bounce discussions or ideas off of.
*If you find this post helpful please paw for visibility.
