Asexuality
Because I'm simply curious...

There is always tons of discussion about homosexuality nowadays. However, I was curious about how many people at UMBC (or on the myUMBC forums, rather), identify as "asexual". Its a sexual orientation that seems to be often overlooked...probably because our society seems to naturally assume that to not feel sexual attractions means to be maladaptive or psychologically disturbed. It is typically assumed that all humans want sex and crave it. It's a natural assumption seeing as though successful reproduction seems to be the driving force of almost all of nature.
But we know humans are supposedly more complex than that, right?
For those who don't know, asexuality is basically the lack of sexual attraction to either sex and any gender. It doesn't necessarily mean you dislike/hate sex. It doesn't necessarily mean you don't want a relationship or like romance. It just means you don't feel physical, sexual attraction.
I'm not referring to asexual reproduction either, lol. No weird cloning thing where an arm detaches and becomes a separate person XD
In case you're wondering, I don't know whether I'm asexual or not, lol. I've never ever felt physical attraction to people. Not once! Its weird. But I do enjoy relationships (sorta) and am fully capable of being attracted to someone based on their personality. So I don't know what that qualifies me as...by some definitions, I'm asexual and by other definitions I just have no real drive.
Isn't human sexuality quirky?
So any of you guys identify as asexual? If so, what has caused you to feel as though that is your orientation? Have you expressed this orientation to anyone close to you? How did they react? If not, what do you think of asexuality? A variant of the sexuality spectrum or a obvious psychopathology that needs to be cured?
(For more info on asexuality, check out the website link!)
EDIT: I decided to add a poll just in case anyone wanted to answer anonymously. I just realized that discussing this for some people may be akin to "coming out" to the community, and they may be uncomfortable with that. And understandably so. So, using Valencia's idea, here's a poll!
