SGA Initatives Night

Join SGA at their 5th Annual UMBC SGA Initiatives Night taking place at Commons Main Street on Monday, December 11 from 6pm – 8pm!
SGA officers will be sharing information about the initiatives they have been working on and campus projects they are dedicated to implementing during their term. Topics include student life, access to committees, maximizing campus resources, supporting student mental health, upcoming engagements and stress-free events, involvement opportunities as well as new projects that benefit the UMBC community. Undergraduate students are invited to connect with us and get involved in all the action! Learn more about what we do, ask questions, provide insight, feedback and share your ideas.
This event is open to undergraduate students only! Free pizza, drinks, and merch will be available for attendees.

Student Staff Positions Available!!
We're looking to expand our team of Student Staff!
The McNair Scholars Program is excited to announce that we are looking for students to fill a variety of positions in our student staff team! We're excited to bring on highly motivated students who are driven to promote community excellence and expand the McNair community. While students with Federal Work Study are preferred, the application is also open to non-FWS students.
- Positions open to undergraduate students only, and students must be able to be at the Catonsville campus during coverage
- Our student staff members are expected to work 6-10 hours within the normal five-day work weeks.
- Student staff members are required to attend:
- One weekly meeting with all student staff members and admin staff
- One weekly meeting with paired student staff partner and admin staff
- Occasional one-on-one meetings with direct supervisor/s (minimum 2 per semester; additional as needed)
- All of our student staff work in a hybrid setting and are co-supervised by admin staff: Program Director Michael Hunt, Program Coordinator Ting Huang, and Graduate Coordinator Ahdrianna Boyce.
The priority deadline for prospective Spring 2024 hires is Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024 by 4:59pm EST. Although the application is open on a rolling basis, we prefer prospective staff members to apply before the semester begins so there is adequate time to process all documentation. Positions open for SP24 are:

Administrative Generalist - background and logistic support for program; expectations include being present for Spring semester events and assisting admin and other student staff as needed

Co-Ambassador of Public Relations - support with social media, webpage, and newsletter; working with Co-Ambassador to determine individual responsibilities

Ambassador of Special Events - support with McNair core events and additional events that encourage scholar bonding
For those interested in Fall 2024 employment, there are potential shadowing opportunities if you submit your application by the Spring 2024 priority deadline. The regular deadline for those seeking Fall 2024 employment is Wednesday, July 31st, 2024 by 4:59pm EST. These positions include:

On Dec. 2, 2023, we had guest speaker, Dr. Christina Roman (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program Manager at The University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division Office of Diversity and Inclusion) joined us for a session on writing personal statements for summer research programs. Happy December everyone!As the semester comes to an end, here are some resourceful events happening next week.
McNair Study Hall
Join the McNair Scholars for their study hall on Wednesday, December 13th from 9am-5pm at Sondheim Hall 101.
The 9am-12pm session will serve as a space for Scholars and Friends of the program to work together, like an unstructured Bootcamp session. The 1-5pm session will be open to current applicants who are in need of assistance or second opinions on their application.
Scholars and Friends (and applicants) who are present during our designated lunch block will be included in food count. We will also have snacks throughout the session.
Please note that this is a free-flowing session, so you may come in and out as you see fit! All McNair Admin Staff do plan to be at the entire session.
Wellness Wednesdays
Join the Peer Health Educators for Wellness Wednesdays! This Wednesday, December 6th from 12-1pm, stop by The Commons Mainstreet. Come learn about coping strategies by taking part in a fun competition and win a prize!

Executive Functioning Workshop 1
Executive functions are things we do daily that help us get things done, like making lists, managing a schedule, and setting reminders. Workshop attendees will work on developing skills to overcome barriers to success, including time management, task prioritization/implementation, motivation, and self-accountability.
Join Retriever Integrated Health at the Center for Well-Being 118 on Tuesday, November 28th from 2:30pm-3:30pm for their non-clinical series. No appointments or consultations are required and all UMBC students are welcome!
Bible Study
Join Bethel Campus Fellowship on Wednesday, November 29th in Lecture Hall one @7pm. They will be looking at boldness in the faith and in sharing Jesus throughout this semester. Join them to experience worship, fellowship, and the Word together! Bring a friend or two!

Keep Your Major, Teach! Week
Have you ever thought about becoming a teacher?
Join UMBC's Department of Education for a week of fun events to learn more about the teacher education programs UMBC has to offer.
Simultaneous events will happen from Monday, November 13th at 10am- Friday, November 17th at 3pm at the Commons Terrace.
UMBC X Towson Wedding Event
The wedding traditions have officially begun!
In a never seen before collab of UMBC EESA X Towson EESA, you don't wanna miss this. Their first ever joint event will be a traditional wedding and performance this fall semester on November 18, 2023 from 5-10pm. Tickets are officially on sale !!! UMBC International Education Week
Join UMBC's Center for Global Engagement for an exciting week of campus-wide fun activities, workshops, presentations, lectures, and more celebrating international education at UMBC!
During International Education Week (IEW), they will be celebrating their international community, supporting international initiatives across campus, and discovering international experiences and opportunities with the entire UMBC community.

As another week comes to an end, here are some key events happening on campus next week.
Keys to Success: Relieve Some of your Networking Stress
Walking into an unfamiliar space and being surrounded by many unfamiliar people with the intent to “network” can feel awkward, even frightening. This workshop aims to relieve some of the stress around networking. Networking is a formal term that means relationship building. When you build genuine professional relationships, you become more aware of your skills and professional brand. In this workshop you will learn when and how to network - both online and offline. Learn not only how to expand your professional circle, but how to build stronger relationships in general, no matter where you make them.
This event will take place on Monday, November 6, from 12-1pm at The Commons 331.
UMBC Volleyball vs NJIT
Gather your friends, family, and colleagues and save for an unforgettable outing!
UMBC women's volleyball will be playing against NJIT on Friday, November 10th at 6 PM.
It's not just about the game – it's about the entire experience! Get your dance team or performance group together to put on live performances that will keep the energy levels sky-high.
More than just a game, our event is a celebration of community. Host a community night with your group or business and bring together fellow fans, athletes, and supporters to share your passion and create connections that extend beyond the event itself.
Aquarium Bus Trip
Take a trip to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor with (seb) and visit the National Aquarium! Follow the Student Events Board (seb) on myUMBCfor ticket information. This field trip will happen on Saturday, November 11th, from 10:30am-4:00pm.

- You’d like to learn about how campus resources can impact your college experience and add to your resume/portfolio as you plan for graduation.
- You want to hear about opportunities for service and engagement in the Baltimore area.
Are you considering graduate studies? Do you have a set plan on achieving your graduate degree? Are you in need of additional support towards your graduate aspirations?
The McNair Scholars Program is a federally funded program that supports the PhD pursuits of first-gen college students from low-income backgrounds and/or from a underrepresented minority group in higher education. Join us in this session to see how McNair fits into your plans for grad school!
Our scholar application for the 2023-24 cycle is open from October 15 to December 15 this year.
