Course description: Pathogens and humans have been having an "evolutionary arms race" since the beginning of our species. We will survey concepts of Evolutionary/Darwinian Medicine to address why humans are susceptible to certain diseases. In this course, we will examine the impact of disease on the evolution of the human body and methods for tracing diseases in our past through skeletal and genetic analyses. We will also evaluate the interplay of evolution and non-evolutionary aspects of common diseases, such as social, political, and cultural aspects of human health and illness on human bodies.
