ANCS Council Fall 2020 Welcome Letter
Salvete and `Χαίρετε!
Welcome back! I hope you're all well and settling into online classes and activities! We at the Ancient Studies Council have planned to host a number of events this fall. We hope to meet you all and our members more than ever before in this unprecedented time.
My name is Gobby Caggiano and I'm serving as president this year—with Dakota Pereira as Vice President and Abigail Kennedy as our Treasurer.
The Ancient Studies Council's Involvement Fest virtual event will be on Wednesday, September 9 on WebEx from 12-2pm. We'll be able to talk about Ancient Studies, the major itself, events planned, and our member engagement for this year. All of the council leadership has been working hard to involve our members through online means and we hope to keep in consistent communication.
- For our first event, we'll be hosting a virtual movie night and streaming Thermae Romae. Following the movie, we'll have a Q&A with Dr. Jones-Lewis!
- For our second event of the semester, we'll have our annual ancient history themed Dungeons & Dragons session, Alea Iacta Est.
- Finally for our last event, we'll be hosting an ancient history themed trivia night with prizes!
As details solidify, we'll make announcements with dates and times for these events! In addition, we are still looking for another officer to join the council for the position of secretary. If you're interested, please email me, Dakota or Abigail! If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to us as well.
We're looking forward to getting to know all of you this year!

Officer Positions for Ancient Studies Council for Next Year

Welcome back! I hope your semester is off to a great start.
The Ancient Studies Council have a great slate of events planned for this fall,
and we can’t wait to share them with you. My name is Matthew Haworth, and I am
the president of the Ancient Studies Council. Our vice president is Spencer
Beck, our secretary is Gobby Caggiano, and our treasurer is Louis Witt.
Involvement Fest is Money, September 9 at noon, in Erickson
Field, and we will be there to talk about Ancient Studies and the major, so
please stop by!
The Ancient Studies departmental meet and greet and pizza
party is next Wednesday, September 11, in PAHB 441. Learn about everything the
department have planned!
Additionally, the Ancient Studies Council have events of our
own planned. As each event draws nearer, we’ll announce dates and locations for
each of these.
- Our first event will be an evening of magic and witchcraft
with Dr. Jones-Lewis. We’ll be making curse tablets and learning about the
place they had in ancient society.
- Next, we’ll be hosting a movie night, with a brief and
topical lecture relevant to whichever film we choose to watch.
- Finally, since last year’s Dungeons & Dragons event was
so popular, we will once again be hosting an ancient history-themed D&D
session.
As details become more concrete, expect announcements for
all of these events. Please feel free to tell your friends and invite them to
experience all that Ancient Studies has to offer!

Welcome to the Ancient Studies Council

Welcome to the fall semester; I hope everyone's school year is off to a magnificent start! The Ancient Studies Council has many great things planned for this semester, and we're excited to share all of that with you. My name is Irene Nolan, and I am the president of the ANCS Council this year. Our vice president is Maegan Crew, our secretary is Matthew Haworth, and our treasurer is Anthony DeFeo.
Involvement Fest was yesterday and we had an awesome turnout. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello! We have a number of upcoming events to look forward to:
- The Ancient Studies Pizza Party is Wednesday, Sept. 19th, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm in PAHB 441. This is a great opportunity to meet the Ancient Studies faculty, staff, and students, and also to have free pizza.
- The ANCS Council Bake Sale is also Wednesday, Sept. 19th, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm in the Commons Breezeway. Feel free to stop by on your way out of the pizza party for desserts and to support the ANCS Council!
- The first ANCS Council meeting will be on Wednesday, Sept. 26th, at 5:30 pm in PAHB 441. At this meeting, we'll discuss future events, hear suggestions, and answer any questions you may have about the Council. Immediately following, we will be hosting our first Symposium.
- Symposium was a wonderful suggestion by a student at Involvement Fest for the ANCS Council to have a discussion about mythology, ancient history, and other related topics in a relaxed atmosphere over snacks. Our first discussion topic is yet to be decided but will be announced soon.
- Scribe School with Dr. Lane will be on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd at 4:00 pm in PAHB 229. Dr. Lane will be teaching us an ancient script, and we will be inscribing it onto clay tablets. Materials will be provided.
Please feel free to invite your friends to all of these events! We will have more events scheduled soon. All of our events and updates will be posted here at the Ancient Studies Council group page. We also have a Facebook page (we have the best memes) which can be found by searching for UMBC Ancient Studies Council.

ANCS Council Spring Interest/Information Meeting
Get Involved!!
Good Evening Ancient Studies Majors, Minors, and Friends!
I hope you have had a great start to the semester and that you are looking forward to ALEA IACTA EST! I know we are.
This Wednesday at 6pm we are hosting a meeting in the Commons, we will meet in front of restaurant row at one of the tables. We will also have a meeting at the same time and place next Wednesday (March 1st). This is a chance for you to get involved in our events!
Alea Iacta Est
Join us for a night filled with games and fun! Dr. Bailey-Kutner will start the night with a brief lecture detailing the function of games in the ancient world followed by the opportunity to play ancient Roman legionary games, Risk, Munchins, Senet, and MORE! Stay for a few games and grab some pizza while earning champion tokens for the chance to win prizes.
Scribe School 3: Tabula Rasa
You've been watching and waiting, now its finally here. Join ANCS for our third installment of our Scribe School. This time students won't be learning insular miniscule with a quill feather from Dr. Jones-Lewis or writting on clay tablets with Dr. Lane, this time students will get their very own wax tablet for a seminar on ancient classrooms with Prof. Phin! RSVP ASAP to secure a tablet of your very own.
