Dear Ancient Studies Majors,
It the season for advising and enrollment once again. Please email your advisor to set up a mutually convenient day and time for Fall 2025 advising. We would like you to complete this process by the time of your registration appointment. You can find the day and time of your registration appointment at
https://registrar.umbc.edu/calendars/registration-appointments/. Eligibility is based on the number of credit hours you have earned. The earliest day and time for registration is Apr. 1 at 9:30 am, if you have 130 credits or more.
If your last name begins with the letters A-B, your advisor is Dr. Rosenbloom.
If your last name begins with the letters F-H, your advisor is Dr. Kutner.
If you last name begins with the letters I-O, your advisor is Dr. Jones-Lewis.
If your last name begins with the letters P-W, your advisor is Prof. Phin.
Note: If you would prefer to stay with an advisor you have had in the past, you can contact that advisor instead of the one assigned to you by your last name.

Ancient Studies Week 2024 will take place during the week of Oct. 7-11.
The annual Homerathon kicks off the week on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 10:00 am-6:00 pm at the Forum in front of the Performing Arts and Humanities Building. Come and hear the more than 80 readers of Homer's Odyssey.
On Wednesday Oct. 9 between 7:00 and 9:00 pm in Performing Arts and Humanities 234, Ancient Studies faculty and students are reading Aristophanes'
Assemblywomen, a comedy in which women take control of Athens and collectivize the ownership of property, but their accommodation of an odd proposal from the city's old men leads to unexpected trouble. A few more readers are needed. Contact Dr. Rosenbloom (
dsrose@umbc.edu) if you would like to read a part. Pizza and soft drinks will be served at the event.
OnThursday Oct. 10 from 4:00-5:00 pm in the A.O. Kuhn Library Gallery, Professor Phillip Mitsis, Alexander S. Onassis Professor of Hellenic Culture and Civilization, Professor of Classics and Hellenic Studies, and Affiliated Professor of Philosophy and Medieval and Renaissance Studies at New York University will deliver the Ancient Studies Week Keynote Lecture, "Plato on the Morality of Hate." A reception will follow in the Library Gallery.
Ancient artifacts from the Department's Spiro collection will be displayed on Main Street in the Commons from 1:30 to 3:30 pm on Friday, Oct. 11.

Readers Needed: Aristophanes' Assemblywomen
Women takeover and install communism. What could go wrong?
Readers are needed for a student and faculty reading of Aristophanes’ Assemblywomen. The performance will take place on Wednesday, October 9 from 7:00-9:00 pm in PAHB 234. Pizza and soft drinks will be served.
The Assemblywomen dramatizes how women dress as men, take control of the assembly, and vote to hand power over to women. Once in charge, the women install public ownership of all property, turn law courts into communal feasting halls, and try to coax citizens to transfer their property to the state for the common good. Things go off the rails after an amendment to the women's proposal insisted upon by the old men of Athens leads to absurd consequences. There will be a rehearsal before the performance on the afternoon of Wednesday Oct. 9 between 4:00-6:00 pm in PAHB 441.

Fall 2024 Welcome Letter
χαίρετε and Salvete!
We at the Ancient Studies council want to extend a very warm welcome to the new students who have begun their UMBC experience, and to those who are continuing their Retriever experience! Now, many may well ask, “What exactly is this club, and what do you do?”
Well, φιλοι, the answer to that is actually pretty simple! We are a club that wants to spread the joy of looking at the Ancient Mediterranean as an Ancient Studies major to the student body, and the most enjoyable parts of the study of the Ancient Mediterranean!
We have a variety of events this semester:
- September
- Tabula Rasa: Professor lead event where you learn to write Latin in wax tablets (you get to keep the tablet!)
October
- Ancient-themed DND: a Greece themed 1-shot tabletop event, in collaboration with the Table Top Gaming Club!
- (Tentative) Trip to the Walter's Gallery: a field trip to the Baltimore Walter's Gallery, which has a beautiful collection of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and some Sumerian artefacts on display!
November
- Fall Festival: make and decorate your own Roman column!
- Votive Offerings: make a small clay sculpture to offer to the gods (for good luck on your finals)!
- Movie Night Bingo: relax, have fun, and eat pizza while watching an ancient themed movie (movie tbd)

Announcing the Humanities Retrievers
Dear ANCS Majors and Minors,
The Dresher Center is developing a new humanities-student group, The Humanities Retrievers. The goal of the Humanities Retrievers is to provide undergraduate humanities students with a network that offers information, activities, experiences, community engagement, and professional development opportunities as a means of encouraging interest in the humanities, academic excellence, and career/post-graduation preparedness.
This semester will feature the following events:
Sept. 11th in PAHB, 216, at noon- Orientation for interested students.
Sept. 18th in PAHB, 216 at noon- Fall Workshop #1
Oct. 23rd in PAHB, 216 at noon- Fall Workshop #2
