The Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome – “The Centro” for short – is the premier study abroad program for students who are passionate about ancient Rome and who long to experience it up close and in depth.  We run one-semester programs in both the Fall and the Spring terms.

The Centro’s curriculum focuses on learning on-site. The central course, “The Ancient City,” takes students to archaeological sites and museums virtually every class day. Students experience lessons in the Forum, below the Vatican, at hidden gems around Italy – in other words, the Roman world is the classroom.

We take the show on the road – next year, to Asia Minor and the Bay of Naples.  In addition to outings within the city and day-trips from Rome, the Centro hits the road three times through the semester, experiencing a 7-day trip to Asia Minor and two 4-day trips to Campania.

In short, engagement with the raw stuff of history is central to the program’s ethos, and, thanks to the Rome staff’s connections, Centristi get into places that few (if any) other groups are allowed to tread.

The Centro has a policy of meeting every student’s financial need. We want to share the Centro’s unique experience with as many students as possible.  Students can receive more than $35,000 in financial aid when they demonstrate need.

Beyond “The Ancient City,” the Centro offers Greek and Latin at the intermediate and advanced levels, yet experience with Latin or ancient Greek is not required for the program.  Our course offerings extend to Elementary Italian, Renaissance/Baroque Art History, and Conservation of the Material Heritage of Ancient Rome.  Additionally, we offer an internship with the archaeological study collection at the American Academy in Rome.

Overall, the Centro provides your opportunity to study abroad in Ancient Rome.

Welcome to the spring semester! We hope you had a relaxing and restful winter break! We will continue to spread the joy of looking at the Ancient Mediterranean, no matter if you have an ANCS degree or are just looking to become an ancient history enthusiast!

• Trip to D.C. – Join us and the Ancient Studies Department for a day trip to D.C.

• Scribe School – A professor led event where you’ll learn about Sumerian seals, and make one yourself

The Greek Theatre Program, which is run by the British American Drama Academy, offers an incredible opportunity to work with leading academics and theatre practitioners in the UK and Greece. It is a month-long summer program dedicated to exploring the performance, reception, and modern relevance of ancient drama.  This is a multi-disciplinary course which combines theory and practice throughout. Course participants will spend the first ten days of the course in London before traveling to Greece for eleven days of workshops and visits to explore ancients sites and then returning to the UK for a final week-long residency at the Archive of Performances of Greek & Roman Drama in Oxford. The course dates for 2025 are 7th June - 4th July.   The course provides a number of unique opportunities for participants to:  Visit ancient sites in Athens, Delphi, Mycenae and Epidaurus, studying and performing chosen extracts from tragedy and comedy along the way Work with leading practitioners from the National Theatre of Great Britain, Complicité, Shakespeare’s Globe and the National Theatre of Greece Research in the one-of-a-kind collections of the Archive of Performances of Greek & Roman Drama at the University of Oxford The deadline for applications for this year’s course is 1st February. The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) seeks candidates for its 2025 Summer Internship in Archaeology. Interns serve a maximum of 400 hours over a period of 10 consecutive weeks to begin on or about May 19, 2025. Current graduate students in anthropology/archaeology are preferred. We also encourage applications from students who are currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from an accredited undergraduate program in anthropology/archaeology or another closely related field.

This is a paid internship. Students will receive a total amount not to exceed $6,600.00 paid in bi-weekly increments based on the number of hours worked at a base rate of $16.50 per hour.
