Dear ANCS Majors and Minors,

The period during which classes will be held online, Mar. 24-April 3, coincides with the advising period for Fall 2020. Face-to-face advising sessions will not take place during this period. 

As a consequence, advising  this semester will take place by email. If you would like to arrange a teleconference advising session on Webex, that’s possible too.

The process will begin with you. When you have determined what classes you would like to take in the Fall 2020 semester (classes will be available online Mar. 21), email Dr. Rosenbloom (drose@umbc.edu) listing these classes. You should also note any specific concerns you would like address about your academic program, if you have any.  Dr. Rosenbloom will examine your record to determine whether these courses further your major and degree requirements, return to you a report on where you stand.  If everything checks out, he will approve you for Fall 2020 registration. 

If you are not sure what courses you would like to take in the Fall 2020, still email Dr. Rosenbloom, but give a him some idea of what courses you would like to take. You and he will then work out a class schedule in the same way as noted above.

If you're interested in holding an officer position on the Ancient Studies Council, please contact Matthew Haworth and me via email by April 1st. In your email, please use subject line: "ANCS Council Positions Inquiry." We are currently looking to fill the positions of Treasurer, Vice President, and President. The UMBC Ancient Studies Department will conduct its annual study tour in Rome and Italy March 13-22, 2020. The price of $3,000.00 (based on a group of 25) includes all air and land travel, twin-share accommodation for 8 nights, 8 buffet breakfasts, 2 lunches, 3 dinners, and entrance to all archaeological sites and museums on the itinerary. Single rooms are available at an additional cost of $450.00. ANCS majors and minors, UMBC students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the community are welcome on the tour. The trip can be taken as a 3-credit course in the Winter 2020 term (ANCS 301; winter semester tuition applies). Scholarships are available to Ancient Studies majors taking the course for credit. Places are limited, so reserve yours today! An initial deposit of $700.00 is due October 24, 2019. Applications must be made through the IES Portal at UMBC. The ANCS Department will pay all fees associated with this application.

The tour begins with four nights in Rome and visits to the Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, the Vatican (and Sistine Chapel), the Ara Pacis, and several other important sites. Then we travel by coach to Sorrento on the famed Amalfi Coast, stopping on the way at Tiberius’s villa at Sperlonga and at Paestum to view the remarkably intact temples of Hera and Athena before touring the small but excellent museum there. From Sorrento, we will visit two cities buried under and preserved by the ash of Mt. Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum. On the way back to Rome, we will tour the extraordinary National Archaeological Museum of Naples and the Greek settlement and home to the Sibyl, Cuma. Our final day in Rome will include visits to the Forum and Palatine, Trajan’s Column and Market, the Colosseum.
