Latin immersion post-bac curriculum (& Graduate Certificate) now available online

The Institute for Latin Studies' Graduate Certificate curriculum, in which Latin is the exclusive spoken language, all assignments are written in Latin, and participants engage in close reading of Latin texts, is now entirely available in online courses. This curriculum has already become well known for offering deep immersion in the spoken use of Latin, a wide variety of exercises Latin prose composition, and exposure to the entire patrimony of literature in Latin, which includes not only seminal texts from antiquity, but also Latin literary masterpieces produced in early-modern and modern times. All these benefits are now accessible in an online, but real-time format.

Also now available online are two courses in Latin Prose Composition, which were previously accessible only to students physically situated in the campus of the University of Kentucky. These courses will focus in depth in the techniques of writing prose in Latin, a skill that is also highly beneficial for people interested in speaking correct Latin.

Yet another addition to our roster of online offerings is an Intensive and Accelerated Introduction to Latin. Participants in this course will learn in accelerated format and in the space of one academic term most of the important basic principles of Latin morphology and syntax, while beginning to read continuous passages from unadulterated Latin texts as they progress.

The deadline for the Call for Papers/Posters submissions is February 22nd, 2023.

For the general session, we encourage papers engaging with, but not limited to: 

• New materialities in the digital age 
• (Dis)connectivities in human/environment/object relationships 
• Unboxing dichotomies and other non-binary approaches 
• Broader ideas of change which could be applied to material culture, agency, identities, or even techniques and approaches in archaeology 

Please indicate which theme session you wish to contribute to, or if you are submitting to the general session. Any papers that are not accepted for a themed session will be considered for the general session (organised by the Local Organising Committee). 

• Paper submissions for TRAC sessions should include:

Poster Submissions 

We will be only accepting digital posters. 

Posters must be in a .png or .jpg file format. Use a 16:9 aspect ratio with a minimum width is 1000 px (24.46 cm) and a minimum height is 600 px (15.88 cm). Landscape is preferable to view the full image, but portrait will also be accepted. You can use PowerPoint, Canva, or another third-party application to design and save a 16:9 image. Maximum file size is 3 MB. Do not use a transparent background.

Course: Introduction to Bioarchaeology

The Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory for Archaeological Science is offering an intensive week-long course in bioarchaeology to introduce participants to the analysis of human skeletal remains from archaeological contexts. Dr. Ioanna Moutafi, Post-Doctoral Fellow of the Wiener Laboratory and expert in bioarchaeology and Aegean prehistory, will lead the course with assistance from Dr. Dimitris Michailidis, an anthropologist/paleontologist and Coordinator of the Wiener Laboratory. Human bones are a unique strand of archaeological evidence, as they provide a vast array of both biological and cultural information about life and death in the past. This course will offer both the theoretical and basic technical skills for the analysis and interpretation of human remains, through lectures, seminars and interactive hands-on practical sessions. The objective is to familiarize participants with all aspects of the human skeleton and the different insights they can offer us into the past.
 
The course will explore key themes in bioarchaeology, such as:

-       Human skeletal anatomy and bone identification
-       Estimation of sex and age-at-death
-       Skeletal variation
-       Dealing with commingled human remains
-       Paleopathology
-       Nutrition and diet
-       Current biomolecular advances (a-DNA, stable isotopes)
-       Bones in context: social bioarchaeology and funerary archaeology

A maximum of 12 participants will be accepted for the course. Preference is given to graduate and advanced undergraduate students with an interest in archaeological science, bioarchaeology, and funerary archaeology. The course is also ideal for professional archaeologists or museum curators who may occasionally need to work with human remains. This course is not geared toward people with significant experience in human osteology or bioarchaeology. No prior experience in human osteology is required.
 
Training fee is 450 euros for the entire course. Accommodation is not provided, but we will offer recommendations and assistance to course participants in order to arrange accommodation themselves.

Applications will include a brief cover letter outlining the background of the candidate and interest in participating in the course, a CV, and names and email addresses of two referees. Referees might be contacted for references after the application deadline, if necessary.
