This talk traces the "constant and continual rupture" that undocumented trans* and nonbinary subjects in the United States are subjected to and the mechanisms of imagination we employ in turn to rupture the continual logic of empire, gender, and political membership. The talk asks: how does insisting on the imagination help us architect livable futures? And what blueprints have undocumented trans* activists and cultural producers already created for us to use when imagining alternative realities?

Biography: Alan Pelaez Lopez is an artist and theorist from Oaxaca, Mexico currently based in California. Their work attends to the quotidian realities of undocumented migrants in the United States, the Black condition in Latin America, and the units of intimate kinship that trans and nonbinary people build in the face of violence. Their debut visual poetry collection, Intergalactic Travels: poems from a fugitive alien (The Operating System, 2020), was a finalist for the 2020 International Latino Book Award. They are also the author of the chapbook to love and mourn in the age of displacement (Nomadic Press, 2020), and editor of When Language Broke Open: Anthology of Queer and Trans Black Writers of Latin American Descent (University of Arizona Press, forthcoming 2023).

This lecture is organized by the Department of Gender, Women's, + Sexuality Studies.

Co-sponsored by the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS); CAHSS Faculty Women's Network; the Center for Innovation, Research, and Creativity in the Arts; the Department of English; the Department of Visual Arts; the Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication; the Latin American Studies Minor; Women Involved in Learning and Leadership Program; the Department of American Studies; the Latin American Feminisims Working Group; the LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Association; and the Dresher Center for the Humanities.

UMBC is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all students, staff, and visitors.
Prof. King and Sonia Eaddy Awarded 2023 Crystal Eagle

<Tagline>Presented by the Owners’ Council of America</Tagline>

Congratulations to Professor Nicole King and Sonia Eaddy!

For 2023, the Crystal Eagle was awarded jointly to two extraordinary women. Sonia Eaddy is a homeowner, resident of west Baltimore, and community activist and Nicole King is an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County. The award commemorates their efforts to save the historic black neighborhood of Poppleton from being destroyed and replaced by an ill-conceived, poorly planned, and largely failed urban renewal project. Although this project came into existence nearly 50 years ago, and resulted in the destruction of over 500 private properties, very little redevelopment has taken place. Meanwhile, the neighborhood of Poppleton has been left to suffer the loss of its' homes, shops, and businesses.

But instead of giving up, the residents have fought back. Led by determined Sonia Eaddy and Professor Nicole King (whose knowledge and research of the disastrous impact that urban renewal has had on black and brown communities, particularly in Baltimore, proved invaluable in changing hearts and minds) they have now convinced city officials to withdraw the eminent domain taking of Sonia Eaddy's home and several historic town homes. But these two remarkable women are not done fighting. They understand that the movement they started is far bigger than any one or two people. They intend to continue their grassroots community effort to force the City to consider the needs and desires of all stakeholders in any redevelopment that should take place, but particularly the residents of Poppleton.

Press Release attached.
