Luke 10:38-42
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Reflect:
Yesterday, we responded to the Lord’s calling in our lives. How are we to live day to day as His called people? We see in today’s passage that Mary understood what was most important now as one called by God - she was to spend her time and her life in the Lord’s presence. She did this by positioning herself at the feet of Jesus, listening, learning, and knowing Him. In the culture back then, this signified
that you were a student of the one you sat before and ultimately someone who wanted to follow in that person’s footsteps. Knowing more about Jesus was so important to Mary that she was determined to be in His presence, even at the risk of sitting in a place usually reserved for only males. In contrast, Martha missed out on what Mary caught to be most important, objecting to her behavior. In response, Jesus affirms Mary and her heart.
Respond:
Being in Christ is more than just our one time salvation experience - it’s about cultivating a lifestyle and heart attitude that is continually in the Lord’s presence and attuned to His heart. There is endlessly more to knowing who our Lord is - as we endeavor to know Him better, we’ll find ourselves more and more captivated, transformed, and in love with Him. This is the truth that Mary discovered and treasured in her life. Likewise, let’s come and take our place at Jesus’ feet today. As we present all of our minds and hearts before Him, let’s confess that we want to know Christ more and let’s spend time listening to what He has to say to us.
