Luke 5:33-35 - They said to him, “John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.” Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.”
Jesus said that His disciples would fast in this day and age, this in-between time often called the “already-not-yet.” We know that He is the bridegroom who has come and secured us for Himself. But we also know that He will return, and we yearn for that day:
Revelation 19:6-9 - “Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:
“Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
Fine linen, bright and clean,
was given her to wear.”
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.) Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”
When we fast, we are viewing the trajectory of our lives (and all of history) according to Revelation 19. We are saying-
“Lord, I believe that this wedding feast is to come.”
“Lord, thank you for the blessing of your invitation.
“Lord, may others hear that invitation.”
“Please help me, help us, to make ourselves ready.”
“Help me, help us, to do your righteous acts in this world.”
When we fast, we are saying -
“Come, Lord, Jesus, come.”
“Come into my life, my home, this situation, that need.”
“Come because we are the bride and you are the bridegroom - we wait for and need You.”
“Come with Your presence.”
“Come, Lord Jesus, we wait for Your return.”
Let’s respond as His bride today - thanking Him for the wedding feast that is promised, and asking our bridegroom to come! And as we pray, let us also worship to the song, “Even So Come.” Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBHcvJhc6Pk
