Colossians 2:9-12 - “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.”
The Colossian church had many challenges, but a specific one was the cult pagan worship that was rampant in that city. The pressure for all the believers was not just with persecution, but they were challenged by spiritual forces, demonic oppressions, etc. - you name it they had it. As a response Paul sets forth the greater reality of Christ. He is the Lord, supreme, above all and that’s the meaning of fullness. Jesus is not one to compete with idol worship, but Jesus is above all and the fullness of Christ is with the church.
And through baptism, having been buried with him, the believers also have the fullness of life in Christ. They do not merely believe, but the new life in Christ is in the fullness of Jesus himself who is above all.
The more we study Paul, we see that he is always trying to get the people to know the full reality of what Jesus has done and who Jesus really is! Perhaps we need to be challenged that way today. Do we understand the fullness of what Christ has done? There is no shortage of amazement!!!
Response: Let us all today be amazed at the fullness of who Jesus is, and the fullness that we have been brought into as the people of God.
