Psalm 139:1-6 (NIV)
“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.”
God enables us to be devoted to Him. This is the grace in which we now stand. We can be “all in” in our devotion and worship to God because He is “all in” for us. Psalm 139 speaks of how God is “all in” for us. God intimately knows us relationally. He just doesn’t know our thoughts but He knows completely the motives and agendas behind them. God knows what we think about people and circumstances. He knows all our activities and hears all our communications. God knows us more than we know ourselves. Wherever we are, nothing is hidden from God for we are totally naked in His sight. How do you hear these words of Psalm 139? Are you frightened by them? Do you think God is out to get you? Or do you hear grace?
King David’s response is not fright but reverent awe of such a wonderful God. He declares that Such knowledge is too wonderful… [marvelous, miraculous] for our human minds to completely comprehend! Who God is and how God was active in David’s life was the reality of God’s grace and mercy to David. Because God knows the whole of who we are like this, we are assured of who we truly are in Christ, and it is wonderful! This is how God is “all in” in His devotion to us! May we turn to the Lord today with reverent awe and worship Him, proclaiming as David did - Such knowledge is too wonderful for me! Let’s ask God to help us to see Him in our lives as “all in” and to help us be “all in” in our devotion to Him with the whole of who we are.
