Psalm 115:4-8 (NIV) - “But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats. 8 Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.”
In v8, God’s word says how we become like what we worship and trust in. It’s sobering to think if we worship and trust in money, we will become greedy; If we trust in ourselves, we will become prideful; If we worship and trust in success and work, we will become anxious and frustrated. We may not intentionally decide that we are going to worship idols or man-made things, but giving our hearts to idols starts with relying on the man-made things like silver or gold to provide us with a sense of security, worth, and significance.
If we are not worshipping God as we have been created to do, we may be worshipping something else like money, sex, success, power, fame, work, relationships, etc. Idols are not God. They do not give life, and they are not to take the place of God. It is God who created us. He breathed life into us. Why should we submit and offer ourselves to things that are made by human hands? In doing so, we will become less than who we are created to be. To be fully human is to reflect God’s glory in our lives. Is something or someone other than God giving you worth or significance in your life?
Take a moment to repent and turn from worthless things to worship the living God.
