Ephesians 5:18-20 (NLT) - “Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Zephaniah 3:17 (NLT) - “For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
Our lives are filled with so much activity and demands. Our focus is on our problems, our needs, and ourselves. We have to go to work, finish our homework, take care the children, eat, sleep, etc. These are all the stuff of daily life on this earth. We can live forgetting who we are and live as if God is not real. God calls us to sing to Him. The Bible contains over 400 references to singing and 50 direct commands to sing. In the book of psalms, a collection of songs was used in various occasions and seasons of life.
We are commanded to sing! It doesn’t matter so much whether you have a good voice or not, if you are tone deaf, or the style of music. We sing because the Spirit of God is alive in us. We sing because of what Jesus Christ has done. As we do, we come alive to the reality of the Kingdom of God, the reality of eternity, the reality of heaven and God’s great love for us.
God sings His love and delight over us! What a way to express His love for us! Let’s sing to our God in response to His great love for us. Let’s proclaim His worth with our songs and with the whole of our lives!
