Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) - “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
So, what is the ‘wonder-work’ of God in our lives? In today’s passage, we are described as God’s handiwork, with the sole purpose of being created in Christ Jesus to do good works. The word handiwork in the original language is poema, which means poem. For those that have either written or have appreciated poetry, an excellent poem involves much thought, creativity, beauty, and originality. Therefore, the work of salvation in our lives is much more than a mere cookie-cutter experience. Rather, we are called the ‘poem’ of God, where each experience, each encounter, and the empowering of the Spirit in our lives is God’s work of poetry. This can be seen in how each of our experiences, encounters, and testimonies are not only unique, but they also speak of God’s intricate and wonderful working in our lives. The verse continues by saying that God created us (His poem) in order to do good works, which can be defined as the continuation of Jesus’ earthly ministry of preaching, healing, forgiving, and proclaiming the Good News.
Today, let’s be greatly encouraged that we are God’s poem, created in Christ Jesus to do His good works, which have already been prepared and planned in advance by God for us. As an expression of your worship, spend today writing a short poem expressing your worship, prayers, and thanksgiving to the Lord.
