John 14:10-11 (NIV) - “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”
As human beings we are fascinated by stories of the miraculous and the same could be said about the crowds and disciples in Jesus’ time, although for them it was not stories as much as real-life, right before your eyes experiences they witnessed. As we see in the passage, Jesus uses the witness of those works of wonder to point to THE Wonderworker - God the Father. Jesus states that his words, the authority, the works themselves come from God the Father who is doing his work.
Twice in the passage we see the line, “I am in the Father, and the Father is in me.” This is at the heart of living in the wonderwork of God and following in the line of Jesus’ works, St. Nicholas’ works, the work of all Christians before us and for us today, the call to also wonderwork. Because we are in the Father and Father is in us, we can participate in the work that God is doing and wanting to do in our church, homes, workplace, campus and among our families, friends, and neighbors.
Let us pray today for more of God’s work in those places, areas and people in our lives. Let’s also pray that God would use us to do works of wonder - works of mercy, works of forgiveness, works of service, works of faith, works of healing, works of miracles - works that produce faith in our own and others’ lives.
