Isaiah 64:1-5 - “Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you! As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you! For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you. Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him. You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways.”
In 1 Corinthians 2 (our main message passage), Paul is quoting from Isaiah 64. This passage is a cry to God for mercy, asking Him to come and rescue. As in many prayers of Scripture, Who God is and What He has done are recalled. The one praying is calling to mind - and “reminding” God - of Who God is, what He is like, what he has done. (God doesn’t need reminding, but He does tell His people to call to mind Who He is and what He has done, because we are the ones who need reminding.)
What the author of Isaiah recalled to be true about God was amazing; how much more amazing is our view on this side of the cross!
Let’s call to mind the truth of verses 3-5. Let’s give thanks to God for the very particular ways that we have seen Him act on our own behalf and on behalf of His people. Let’s declare that there never has been and there never will be anyone like our God. And let’s thank Him for the incredible, unexpected work He has done by sending Jesus.
Today, let’s have our minds filled with these kind of thoughts. May we see everything through this filter of what God has done and Who He is.
